The beginning
April 13th, I had my last prenatal exam before my due date, and I asked for my dilation level because I wanted to know how close I am to the labor. I was 2cm, 80% effaced, level 0. The midwife told me that I might have a quick labor because the baby is so low, but we still talked about what will happen if I go over the due date.
That next day, after coming back from work, eating dinner and taking a walk, I was in labor. Well, it is a big mystery when my labor started, but I started to have strong contractions from 10pm on April 14th. Before that I was having pretty regular contractions without pain about every 30min during the day and every 10 min at night for about a week and a half. I told Will not to fly back from Seattle (where he works) because I will probably have a long labor as a first time mother…. which turned out to be a big mistake! But he was with me the whole time over the phone from Seattle.

Stage I
The painful contractions started every 7min, and I knew this is the real labor. I tried all the breathing techniques that I learned in the prenatal class and they helped a lot. A LOT. When I was having strong painful contractions, I could not help myself but starting with level II (1 in 1 out) breathing because they hurt, but Will reminded me to do level I (slow breathing; 4 in 8 out, in my case), and this actually helped me a lot. Counting in my head did give me the control over the pain and distracted me from the pain the most. I remember screaming at Will between contractions to remind me to calm down and do level I breathing because it worked so well, but every time I had contractions I could not help but start with level II. I drank water to rehydrate myself and changed positions about every 30 min. Will called the birthing center when my contraction got every 3min with 1min interval for about 30min. They told us to stay at home for a couple of hours. I swear to god, I thought they were evil to have me go through with this for much longer. My voice got louder every time I breathed as contractions got stronger. I tried the tub at home and it helped me the most but I could only sit up or kneel in the tub when the contractions started. They were too painful to lie on my back. I stayed in the tub for about an hour since that was my favorite place, but it got hotter and I had to get out. I started to have even stronger contractions after coming out from the tub, and I was having “urge to push”. But at that time, I thought there is no way I would be having “urge to push” this early, so I just thought I was having stronger contractions. But I could not help myself wanting to go to the birthing center, so told Will to call them again. During the call, I had a contraction and they heard the way I breathe, and they told me to come in.

At 2AM, Motoko (my mom) and I started walking to the birthing center which is usually a 10min walk from our apartment. I had contractions during the walk by the tennis court, at the intersection, by bushes on Covell Blvd, the parking lot, and at the center. I did not care about waking people up with my voice at all at this point. Each of us had a pillow and we used them to protect my knee every time I knelt down to ease my contractions away. When I got to the birthing center, the main door was closed and had to go around to the side door. I was yelling the f-word in my head.

Stage II
When I got to the center, they examined me and told me I was fully dilated and ready to push. I freaked out because 1) I wasn’t mentally ready because as a first time mom I thought I would have a good 8 more hours to go, 2) I wanted to wait till Will got there, and 3) I was on a bed instead of a tub with operation kit (clamps and scissors, etc ) shining right in front of me. The tub wasn’t ready when I got there. Tearing was my biggest fear during the labor and I did not want to push on the bed (I heard the water birth prevents severe tears). I did my first semi-serious push, just to see how it’s like to push. I felt the baby going down and it was bigger than I expected. I freaked out again. Since then, I stopped using the contraction to push as I was told to because I was afraid for tearing and I was also confused because during the stage I, you ease the contraction away by breathing and I’ve got used to this over the last few hours.

Once I was in the tub, I was still hesitant and weighing pushing and tearing. I kept telling them that I don’t want to push and they waited for me with patience. In about 10min in the tub, it got harder to ease the “urge to push” feeling and Will (on the phone) told me to push and reminded me that I could do this. Also, the midwife told me I could do this just like my body knew how to grow a baby in side of my body. So… I pushed. No body counted for me like I saw on TV because I was not on a monitor and I was the only one to know when I’m having the contraction to push. First push in the tub, I felt the pop and that’s when my water broke. During the next contraction, I did about 3 pushes with a contraction just like I learned in class, and my baby was out into the world. It felt so good. It is really like pushing 9 month of constipation out. I screamed not because it was painful, but because of the surprise. Like, Ah~-she’s-coming-out scream. 3:40am on April 15th, after about 6 hours of labor, Emma Jeanne Ambrosini was born.

Stage III
After the birth was the placenta. Pushing it out was a piece of cake, but after the placenta was the most painful part for me probably because I did not know what to do and I was not expecting it at all. I remember Vickie (the lecturer of the prenatal class) covered this very quickly in the last class that the midwives will push your belly to stop the bleeding. And they did and it hurt so bad. I bled a lot so they even gave me an IM shot of Oxytocine on my thigh. I screamed the whole time and Will told me that this stage scared him the most during the delivery.

Postpartum
After the birth, they showed me how to take care of my tear (yes, I had a second degree, superficial tear, but… it’s nothing to worried about after the whole thing) and took me to the postpartum room. The baby never left my side till I left the center at Sutter Davis. We co-slept till discharge which was about 30 hours later after the delivery.

[STAGE I]
During Stage I, I want to focus on three things AT HOME; controlled breathing, positioning, relaxation

To accomplish those, I need the followings;
Water (to drink)
Heater (Heat pad and bag)
Ice pack
Massage
Relaxation and Controlled breathing
(Level1: 4 in 8 out, slow breathing)
(Level2: 1 in 1 out, fast breathing)
(Level3: hee-hee-hee-foooooo)

Till the urge to push, 3-1-1 (3min apart contraction, 1min long contraction, lasting 1hr), or transition stage, I want to do the followings while changing the position every 30min. If I find a comfortable position, I might stick to it longer than 30min.
Walking
Armless chair
Kneeling (rocking or one knee up)
Squatting
Balance ball

Then, I will to walk to the hospital with my hospital bag and the baby carrier.

[STAGE II]
During Stage II, pushing stage, I will push using contractions.
Breathing pattern will be;
1- Inhale-exhale
2- Inhale-exhale
3- Inhale-hold the breath for 6sec while pushing-exhale
4- Inhale-hold the breath for 6sec while pushing-exhale
5- Inhale-hold the breath for 6sec while pushing-exhale
Repeat the whole thing during the next contraction.
I want my supporter to remind me to relax or open my V and no holding breath in my face when I’m pushing.

No mentioning about me pooping, tearing, what so ever! This will freak me out and probably discourage me from pushing hard.

[STAGE III]
I want Will to cut the cord.
I want my supporter to remind me to see my placenta. I might forget to do this with the excitement of the birth.

申請4ヶ月で婚姻によるグリーンカード取得　その2

その2では、申請時の状況、タイムテーブルなどを紹介したいと思います。

まず、申請から4ヶ月でGC取得できた当時の私の詳しい情報は、

①カリフォルニア州立大学院にF1留学中（当時26歳）
（F1ビザは、修士課程のもので、期限が6年残っていた）
日本で獣医師免許を取得後、カリフォルニア州立大学で修士を取得後、博士課程に入学したばかり。（博士課程入学が決まっていなかったら、アメリカでの長期滞在が確約できず、主人もプロポーズなんてできなかっただろうな。。。）また、F1ビザの期限が6年と充分残っていたため、ビザが切れるから駆け込みで結婚をしていると疑われることがなかったのではと思います。

②主人がアメリカ人（当時33歳、アメリカ国籍、カリフォルニア州民）
主人は同じカリフォルニア州立大学院の博士課程の学生で、職業はTA（ティーチングアシスタント）。収入が少なかったため、私の扶養申請するのに、お互いの貯蓄の証明などが、彼の納税証明書に加えて必要となった。聞いた話では、アメリカ人と結婚するのと、永住権取得者と結婚するのとではかかる時間が大分異なるとのこと。

③アメリカ、カリフォルニア州で申請
そこに住んでいたので、カリフォルニア州で。

④交際した期間は6ヶ月と短め
私の主人は、姉の主人の幼なじみということもあり、5年前から面識はあった。ただ二人ともシャイで、実際の交流は私の修士留学開始時まで、チャット程度しかなかった。これは面接で怪しまれないかと心配した点でもあった。

⑤結婚はネバダ州、リノで簡単に済ませる
よく覚えてないけど、カリフォルニア州ではネバダ州よりは結婚の手続きが面倒だったため。ネバダ州ではラスベガスでも有名なとおり、簡単な結婚手続きができるため、ネバダ州にした。結婚の手続きにパスポート以外何もいらなかった気がする。しかし、簡単な手続きとはいえ、涙が出るほど感動するので、甘く見てはいけない。。。結婚式はお金が貯まってから日本で考えていた。

タイムテーブルは以下のとおり。

結婚式のためのお金が貯まってから手続きをするはずだったが、授業料や今後の就職のことも考え、「早期にアメリカでの永住権を持ってほしい」と主人が提案し、結婚の手続きをすることに決定。

3/15/09　ネバダ州、リノで結婚の手続きをする。

3/23/09　申請受領書が届く。
この間、主人の収入が低いため、手続きの続行ができないなどの手紙が届くが、銀行の残高証明や、再度収入証明書を送ることで、主人が解決してくれた。

4/21/09　Biometricsという指紋などをとられる手続きを完了。

7/15/09　1:30PMからの面接。
こっぱずかしい二人が交わしたメールや写真を持っていき、ものの10分程度の面接が終わった。その時点で、GCがすぐ発行されることを知らされる。この面接日がGC発効日となっていた。

なぜアメリカでしたのか？

私がインターネットでGC申請手続きを検索しているとき、多くのサイトが日本で申請をすると1ヶ月で済む、短くて済むと書いてあった。そして、私の姉自身もアメリカ人と結婚し、日本でGC申請をした一人でもある。

ただ、博士課程に入学したてということもあり、1ヶ月もアメリカを離れ、学業に影響がでるほうが、私にとっては欠点となり、アメリカでの手続きを決意しました。またGC申請終了まで日本に帰れないことも、入学したばかりの私には欠点とは感じられませんでした。

また、2007年から移民法が改良され、外国籍の人が6ヶ月以上日本にいないと、GC申請が日本でできないことになった、という情報もあったので、ほぼ「え～い、アメリカでしちゃえっ」というノリでアメリカでしました。

インターネットなどでGC取得方法を検索した人なら、GC取得期間が人によってまちまちであることを充分知っていると思います。しかし、GC取得期間が、日本の帰国やアメリカへの再入国にかかわってくることもあり、一番心配の種でもあります。

GC取得に2年かかった、9年かかったという暗い話をよく聞いていたので、4ヶ月しかかからなかった私の事例を、これから人生のパートナーとともにGC取得を考えている人たちとシェアしたいと思いました。私たちの条件と似ている人たちは（大学院留学中、パートナーがアメリカ人など）、結構早い段階でGCが取れるのではないでしょうか。

2009年の7月時点でGCを取得しており、2010年の7月までブログにアップするのを待っていたのは、先月6月に結婚式・披露宴を日本で挙げ、それまでは結婚手続きをアメリカでしたことは2人の秘密だったからです☆

クロストーク　国公立大の授業料を引き下げよう

現在米国の獣医系大学院に行っているものです。

米国では、大学生のほとんどが教育ローンで大学へ行っています。これは、医学、獣医学などの学費が高いとされる大学では顕著で、卒業すればある一定、もしくはそれ以上の収入が見込めるため、民間銀行からの教育ローンが活発です。ローン未返還者が他のローンと比べ少ないため、政府も活発に助成しています。一方日本では、教育ローンを組むのにも親の印鑑、保証人等々、とても学生本人ではできない手続きが必要となります。

勝間さんの「日本で高等教育の家計負担が大きいのは、大学の授業料が上がり続けているから」とありますが、理由はそれだけでしょうか？まず、大学の授業料を、親が払うものという大前提があるゆえに、親の家計事情と教育が密接に関係してしまうのではないでしょうか。

大卒で利益を実質的に蒙るのは、ほかでもなく大学へ行く学生です。まして義務教育でもないのだから、親が払うということ事態に疑問を感じなければならないのかもしれません。私も当たり前のように両親に大学での費用を払ってもらいましたが、米国の学生の金銭感覚の優れていることに感心させられます。多くの学生が、自分の消費するものにとても現実的です。また将来の職業にも、自分でローンを返済しなければならないため積極的です。

なので、授業料を下げるよりも前に、社会的にできることは、この悪循環を教育ローンを国、民間銀行をあげて活発化させることです。この対策の利点として１）卒業の意思がある生徒が大学入学を希望し、高い確率で就職していく。２）親御さんの生活（老後）の安定、３）学費を堂々と取れるため、教授陣の給料、研究費が行き渡る、４）政府がサポートするべきものが、学費負担でなく日本の機動力への投資となる、が挙げられます。

学費というものは、大学運営に欠かせないものです。それを下げるということは、誰かがそれを負担しなければならないというものです。医者の給料は高いのに、医療サービスが安いのも、誰かが（国）が負担しているからです。しかしこのシステムも医療サービス受給者の割合の増加で崩壊の危機にあります。今から少子化対策で子供の数を増やすとき、教育費を下げると、子供の人数が増えた場合、勝間さんが提案される国が学費を負担するシステムは崩壊するのではないでしょうか？

本庄国際奨学財団への申請書

i)　研究内容
サル免疫不全ウイルスおよび猫免疫不全ウイルス感染症に対するワクチンの開発と効能の研究。具体的には様々なリコンビナントワクチンおよび弱毒生ワクチンの比較実験、抗原提示能の促進機序および投与経路の違いによる効能の比較研究等を行う。また、前記研究の支持研究としてウイルスの感染機序および宿主の感染免疫機序や先天性免疫の研究も同時に行う。

ii)　博士課程卒業までの計画
修士課程
２００８年８月より在籍しているカリフォルニア州立大学獣医疫学修士プログラム（ＭＰＶＭ）ではイルマ・テラフン先生らが既に完了した熱帯感染症分子生物学研究所における研究結果の統計学的解析を主に行う。現在は博士課程でも重要となる生物統計学、実験の計画法を修得し、どの手法を自分のデータに用いるかを検討中である。２００９年３～４月には実験データの解析を行い、修士論文の「結果」の部分を完了させる。５～６月に原稿を書き終え、７月中に審査委員とともに自らの論文を検討・校正する。８月に完成したＭＰＶＭプロジェクトを提出する。

博士課程
１年目は大きく分けて３つの必要事項の達成に努める。まずは博士号取得に必須科目の単位取得である。これらは２００８年度に入学したＭＰＶＭの授業と同様であるが、専門が免疫学、ウイルス学、微生物学、病理学、比較実験動物学に移行したものとなる。ＭＰＶＭの授業は様々な博士課程の学生も授業を受講していることから、その中でも優秀な成績を修めることができたことは博士課程でも充分に学業貢献できるという自信に繋がった。次に、４つの研究室の実習ローテーション中は、日本大学の門井克幸教授の下で３年間学んだ研究知識を最大限に活用し、研究内容と自らの学術的興味の合う研究室を見極め、自らが属する研究室を決定することである。さらにこの後、初期段階の学位研究に取り掛かる。この際、ＭＰＶＭで学んだ実験計画の方法、実験記録のつけ方や用いる統計法といった実験の前段階に可能な具体的な計画を立てる。
２年目も３つの必要事項の達成に努める。まずは選択科目の単位を取得し、各種セミナーに参加する。これらの授業では研究を進めるための学術的交流の能力を評価される。ＭＰＶＭで経験した多くの討論型授業やプレゼンテーションで習得した研究に不可欠な実践的、学術的交流能力と自信を惜しみなく発揮する。次に、この年で最も重要となる博士号の資格審査に合格することである。この審査に合格することで正式に博士号の候補として認められることとなる。その後、博士論文実験の開始に取り掛かる。関連論文を読み上げつつ、実験室の技術者とどのような実験が可能であるか検討する。
３年目もまずは、２年目同様選択科目の単位取得と参加型のセミナーに努め、さらに専門性の高いセミナーへ自主的に参加することから、効果的な専門教育の方法や最新の研究方法を習得する。次に、学位研究の実験をさらに進めていく。次に、論文審査委員との会議を始める。この会議は自分の研究が先入観によって偏っていないか、的確な手法を用いているかどうか教授陣、専門家に指摘してもらうもので、自らの研究に的確な客観性を持たせるために欠かせないものとなるため、できるだけ緻密に行う。
４年目は学位研究の完了に向けて最大限実験に集中する。ワクチン効用比較のために攻撃ウイルス抗原やワクチンに対する抗体を定量するエライザ試験、細胞性免疫を測定するための細胞増殖性試験、ＣＤ８陽性Ｔ細胞の活性を測定するＥＬＩＳＰＯＴ試験、血中のＣＤ４陽性Ｔ細胞の定量実験等を行う。審査委員との打ち合わせを定期的に行い、実験方法の正当性を確認する。この年の最終目標は論文を書き上げ、投稿することである。その為にはまず学位研究を完了し、実験データの解析、参考文献などをまとめ、卒業セミナーにて学位論文を発表する。

iii)　将来の計画・目標
日本の獣医学は技術面では欧米に怠らないものの、教育面、研究面では大きく遅れをとっている。特に米国の獣医学は、多民族国家を背景とし、理論的そして系統的な姿勢が世界に誇る確固とした獣医学教育、研究の提供を可能にしている。
修士、博士課程を米国で修得することで、その長所を最大限自分のものとして吸収したい。
将来は日本に戻り、上記に述べた日本の獣医学の弱点を補う力になることを強く希望する。具体的には獣医大学で感染症、微生物学、内科学の分野で客員教授として教鞭に立つ。可能な限り短期で一般層まで自分が学んだものを還元するために、地域医療に貢献することを強く希望し、臨床研究のできる獣医師教育を目標とした第一次診療を中心とした内科、感染症専門の動物病院を設立したい。目の前の研究、診療に力を注ぐ一方、常に最新の科学に敏感であり、論文を投稿できるような学術的興味を持ち続け、本庄国際奨学財団の名に恥じぬよう、知識人であることに努めたい。

勝間和代のクロストークへのコメント（2009年1月）

＜１＞の提案には大賛成です。テーマが「非正規労働者の待遇改善」なので、話の中心が非正規労働者と思われやすいのでしょうが、これは日本が抱える雇用の仕組みの問題点を的確に捉えています。それは職場間において労働者の流動性、柔軟性の無さです。

まず間違えてはならないことは、正規雇用者の解雇用件を緩和することは、雇う側にとってさらに正規雇用者を雇いやすくなるということです。なぜなら、生産性の低い正規雇用者を解雇できるということは、労働高率の良い新しい正規雇用者を集め、雇用しやすいということになります。つまり、解雇条件を緩和することは、生産性の高い非正規雇用者を増やすためだけではなく、まずは生産性の高い正規雇用者をさらに増やすために理にかなった対策となります。また、この対策で雇用者自身も仕事を辞め、再就職しやすくなり、流動的に動けるようにすれば、多くの人が自分にあった仕事を見つけることができます。自分に合った仕事を見つけるということは、雇用者本人にとってプラスになるだけでなく、雇用主にとっても効率よく雇用者の力量を発揮させ、利益を上げることができます。また、不当解雇防止対策は、第一の提案が導入されれば必然と改善されるはずです。なぜなら、正規・非正規雇用に関わらず、雇用者の労働効率を客観的に評価するシステムがなければ、労働効率に基づいて解雇ができないからです。そうなれば、必然的に不当に解雇をすることもできなくなります。一方、再就職支援の義務化は、雇い側にとって時間的・金銭的負担となるので、解雇や退職の妨げとなりうるので、非効率的だと思います。

＜２＞の提案は、上記のような労働者が様々な職場を行き来できるような対策がなされない限り、難しいでしょう。上記の対策がしっかり理解をえなければ、長時間労働を強いられる労働者が他の短時間で生産性の高い職業に就くという発想が生まれず、また、長時間労働に甘んずる労働者がいる会社の中でも改善がなされません。公務員などで多いサービス残業は、公務員を容易に解雇できない非効率性を如実に示しています。まさに正規労働者が解雇しにくいことが、企業の非効率性と連鎖していることが分ります。ガソリンの値上げでガソリンの消費が減るように、正規労働者の単価が上がれば、その消費（雇用）も減ることは疑問の余地はありません。

＜３＞も上記の対策がしっかり理解をえなければ、企業側の負担としか理解されないでしょう。低賃金の職は相対的に生産性が低い、つまり、特殊技術を必要としないもので、それが最低賃金の職業の最大の利点でもあります。学歴がなくても、経験がなくても誰でも職が手に入るのです。最低賃金が問題なのではなくて、技術があるのにそれを活用する職に転職することが難しいことが問題なのです。つまりは、繰り返しになりますが、労働者にとって職業間を流動的に動けるようにならなければ、低賃金の職業の利点が失われ、企業自体が低賃金雇用をしなくなり、ますます生産性が悪化するでしょう。　

追加として、多くの“日本らしさが失われる”　という意見をみまして、それに対しても少し述べたいと思います。
日本はいつだって、欧米化を目指してきたのではなく、様々な分野において「効率」を上げることに注目し、それを見事に諸外国から取り入れてきました。そこを見落として、欧米化に対して反対するがゆえに、欧米から輸入された、効率のよい対策に対しても反対することは、日本が学ぶべき大切なものを見落とすことになります。日本らしさというものはそんなに簡単に失われるものでしょうか？欧米のようにというと、日本に多くの人は、日本の気質が失われると思い、変化に保守的ですが、効率のよい方法の探究という見方で、柔軟にいけば、日本らしい労働効率のよい方法を見つけられるはずです。

戦後と違い、肉体労働が生産性の多くを占める時代ではなくなりました。高度な技術を使い効率よく仕事ができ、それを確実に評価できる構造が必要です。

My SOP for Colorado State

The Japanese Veterinary education system needs improvement. Specifically, the connection between research and clinical Veterinary Medicine is tremendously weak compare to that of the United States. In Japan, research and clinical Veterinary Medicine are completely separated for political reasons; senior Veterinary students cannot receive practical training because of lack of both teaching skills and motivations of professors. Also, plagiarism is common because of lack of training in academic ethics. Japanese Veterinarians are struggling to absorb the unique characteristic of Veterinary Medicine – dynamic interaction with people in both research and clinical practice – and it has taken a toll on our ability to educate. Backward, bungling bureaucracy makes it near impossible to improve the whole Japanese Veterinary education system at one time, but I want to make improvements at least in my specialization.

The Combined Microbiology Residency/PhD program at Colorado State University will shape me into an expert who can start working on this goal. The program will train me in a diverse environment with ACVM-certified microbiologists, infectious disease specialists, agencies, clients, and students. Your dynamic and challenging program will give me a high ethical standard in academia, more skills for intermingling with various specialists, and opportunities for teaching in academic and practical Veterinary Microbiology. Your program will lead to a faculty position in the U.S. or Japan as it will provide me with credibility and thus influence. Furthermore, my faculty position will encourage women to pursue career in academia especially in Japan where it is still almost impossible to find female faculty members.

Dr. Edward Hoover’s work attracts me the most among the faculty. My study on Simian Immunodeficiency Virus during my master and on Feline Calicivirus during Veterinary school has given me confidence in my research skills to contribute to his work. The Immunological approach in Microbiology moves me because we have came to the point that we cannot understand virus pathogenesis without the understanding of Immunology. Dr. Hana Van Campen’s work also attracts me because Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Bovine Viral Diarria Virus are also economically important diseases in Japan. My work with Dr. Katsuyuki Kadoi, who has specialized in FMD virus, also has given me the laboratory skills to contribute to her work.

My study under Dr. Kadoi at Nihon University in Japan ignited my interest in viral pathogenesis, vaccine development, and Immunology. Three-plus years of working in his Veterinary Microbiology Laboratory gave me rigorous trainings in cell culture, virus isolation, and virus inoculation as well as Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis. His persistent, diligent work and vivid explanation about the potential of the work inspired me to pursue the truth in Veterinary Microbiology. My internship at Angel Animal Hospital in Japan gave me the opportunity to apply the systematic medical approach that I learned during my externship at Texas A&M University and to improve my client communication skills. I enjoyed watching the way my questions and suggestions made my clients and colleagues think, learn, and finally make a decision of the medical plans for their companion animals or patients. Based on these experiences, I see teaching in the classroom or clinic as an important part of my future.

The master program at University of California, Davis, has focused me more on research. The program provided me with rigorous trainings in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, research designs, and animal policies. The program has taught me that it is critical to know the characteristics of study designs including clinical trial and experimental designs and how to interpret the results objectively to give plausible reports. The investigation of outbreaks and running surveillance require the communication with various specialists to prevent the next epidemic. Now, I am eager to apply this knowledge to carry out independent research and analysis, hence my decision to join the PhD program at your department.

All of these experiences have shaped me into a highly motivated, focused, and diligent person, which makes me an excellent candidate for an assistantship or fellowship. I also have access to two recently established cell lines from lungs and kidneys of chicken embryos and I am ready to start a project and apply for grants in avian influenza and other economically important viruses in poultry.

Colorado State University is a rare school that provides the residency program in Microbiology, and your department has so many ACVM-certified faculty that I am confident that I can get a perfect guidance for becoming one; therefore, although UC Davis, which is the school that I am in, is also known for feline viral infectious disease study, but it does not have these above assets and does not interest me as much. Furthermore, only your school welcomes international veterinarians to the Combined residency program in Microbiology. I have well-developed teaching, laboratory, and research skills and I want to exploit these skills to the greatest extent. I believe that if I am given the opportunity to study at your department, it will provide a competitive environment to bring out the best in me and help me to reach my goal of improving the Japanese Veterinary education system.

今の時代に女性天皇を容認することは、女系天皇を容認することと等しい。なぜなら今は明治天皇以前の一夫多妻制がしかれていないためだ。

この問題は、愛子さまの誕生、雅子さまの流産・適応障害から発生し、多くの日本人に天皇家とは何かと問いかけはじめたと思う。

残念ながら悠仁さまが産まれてから（どうあがいても当時の小泉首相の皇室典範の改正への計らいとしかいえないが）、世間からはこの問題を直視する機会が減ってきていると思う。メディアが取り上げなくなったからであろう。

しかし、日本人が見つめなければいけない問題は、メディアが騒ごうが騒ぐまいが存在する。

わたしが日本人として常に思うことは、わたしは保守的であり、かつ進歩的でありたいということである。なぜなら、私は日本人として生まれ、日本を愛し、その文化を保存し継承する義務があると感じるからである。これは日本人だけに限らず、全世界（すごい飛躍だが）の人が自分の国に対し無意識に感じることであろう。

天皇家というのは、日本の歴史を背負った人々だろう。皇族はそのほとんどが外国の書物を読み、異文化を心得ている。それなのに日本で最も保守的な一族に属し、その維持に努めるとは、その意義を無言ながらに示すものだろう。ただし、皇族はその責任があるのであって、その責任に翻弄されることがあってはならない。民主主義的な考えに聞こえるかもしれないが、これは生物学にも似ている。ウイルスは共存がちょうど良い。宿主が死んでしまっては元も子もないからだ。

女系天皇に対し始めは反対だった私も、悠仁さまが生まれてから、変わった。なぜ40歳にもなった紀子様が男子を生んだのか。しかも小泉前首相が皇室典範に手を加えることを認可しようとしている真っ只中に。そして国民の誰もが、まだ生まれていない子供が男児であることを確信したはずである。でなければ、紀子様があの時期に子供を産む理由など、どこにもありはしないからだ。推測は証拠で証明されない限り推測に過ぎないのだろうが、私の推測に反対する人がいれば、その人はあまりに単純すぎる。

21世紀に、そんな理由で産まれる子供がいて良いのだろうか？そして、女性がそんな理由のために子供を産むべきだろうか？天皇家というものを存続させるためだけに子供を産むというのは、あまりにも時代錯誤が過ぎないだろうか？旧宮家の復活も、強引としかとれない。これではあらゆる宗教の原理主義と全く異を示さないと強く思う。

歴史は学ぶに値する。同じ間違いを犯さないためにだ。ただ、歴史もさかのぼれば現存する証拠に基づいてでしか語れないという制限ももっている。私たちの学んだ歴史、とくにはっきりした資料のない時期のものは、文脈の間を想像しているに過ぎない。

天皇家は1500年（神道に基づき、日本国が誕生してから現在まで）の歴史があるという。しかしその間、どのようにして男系が保たれてきたかは、誰にもわからない。判りようがないのである。それを一夫一婦の時代になっても保とうというのは、あまりにも無理があり過ぎないか？平成天皇から初めて民間からの皇后選びとなって、天皇家は血の保存という概念を変えてきた。美智子様の時代から、多くの古典的な天皇家の子供たちの教育の仕方も変わってきた（乳母制度の廃止など）。

日本の皇室は、それに見合った速度で変化してきているのであろう。その歴史から閉鎖的な部分がぬぐえないが、それも日本の皇室を位置づけるものとして存在しても良いと思う。ただ、歴史に翻弄される子供や女性は、文明国日本でこれから生まれてはいけないと思う。悠仁さまや紀子様で十分だろう。

彼の誕生で私たちは自分たちに問いかけなければならない。
私は女系天皇に賛成する。

Japanese don't believe in euthanasia

This is what I heard in the United States when I audited a lecture about pain managements for cancer patients in veterinary medicine.

I can't completely understand what "don't believe in" in this term means, because for me, "believe" with the words related with lives is something to do with religious beliefs. But I can understand that the statement has a point.

Because when I was in the United States, I saw euthanasia pretty frequently which was not a case in my school in Japan or even at my dad's clinic. So, I guess in Japan, pets have to suffer at the very end of their lives and most of the time alone by themselves.

I had two of my patients (seeing with my dad) died so far.

The first one was a 10-year-old, male beagle dog suffered from heart worm disease.
He was doing really good at the first medication, but either because of the lack of my experience or severeness of the dog's condition, he stopped responding to any of medication that I gave to him.

Because he had a serious breathing problem, we asked to the owners not to see him until he gets discharged because he easily gets excited and put himself in to dyspnea, as my mom and dad have told to every owner that have admitted pets with heart worm disease. He died a week later he came here. He died alone 1 hour later from the last time I checked on him, which was 7 in the morning. The first thing that the crying owners said when they walked into the room that we kept him clean and peace was "we wanted to visit him when he was still alive..."

The second one was a 20-year-old female DSH cat with chronic renal failure. she was anorexic for a while so the owner wanted to have a PEG tube placed, and she was transfered from a vet clinic in Saga(佐賀) prefecture.

She was doing pretty good at the first day. Her blood work was much better than the last one the owner showed us, and she looked comfortable surrounded by hot water bags. So we thought we can place the tube earlier than we planned. 2 days later, in the morning that we planed to place the tube, she had two episodes of seizure. We hadn't heard any of such history of her, so we tried to change the operation date. But because the owner and her family were there and wanting the operation and we also thought it's important because she'd not been eating for a very long time, we proceeded to the operation. It went well. After the operation, the owners could see her awake and hissing at us as usual. Because of her condition, we thought these first three days would be critical. I gave her lactulose through the PEG tube q8h for her constipation, and made her urinate q4h by squeezing her bladder. She was dead the next early morning when I checked her to express her bladder.

and here I'm, 4 o'clock in the morning, can't sleep because the cat that I've been taking care of for the last 2 months just got an operation for her PEG tube replacement. Because the second cat that I mentioned died yesterday, I'm completely lost how things are going to be on her. I didn't want her to die alone even it's not likely to happen right away, I'm so desperate right now after seeing the last two cases.
And when I think of this that way, I feel guilty at the same time for those owners that I've met so far. They must have felt the same way as me, not wanting their pets to die alone when they were sleeping. After reading this (http://www.luckiekitty.com/LuckiesTailSayingGoodbye.html), I thought things might get better if we had an option of euthanasia, especially for cases like beagle-dog because he wasn't responding to medications for 3 days and there was a pretty good chance that he could not walk out this clinic.

And I want my cat to die when I'm around. Maybe this is egoistic and selfish thing to say. I really don't know the right answerer for that. I will less feel this way if I'm taking care of heart disease cats or out door cats that most likely hit by a car(and hopefully die instantly), because most of the time those things happen acutely. But, when my cat is old and suffering from chronic disease, when things get worse, I wanna be there for her. She got chronic renal failure and a PEG tube already. It's for slowing the process to get to uremia. And I believe my cat doesn't need to suffer at the very end of her life, as long as she is comfortable, and I make sure that she is comfortable.

I'm Japanese. Without knowing it, I might not believe in euthanasia, too.
But I wish we had medical options including euthanasia in critical cases in Japan.

日本に帰ってきて、2週間が経とうとしている。

やっぱり実家に帰ると、さまざまなことに駆られ、忙しく自分のペースが掴めずに2週間が経った気がする。

ここで、もう一度振り返り、自分のペースを戻すべく、気持ちの切り替えをしなくちゃと思う。また、初心を思い出すべく、アメリカから一時帰国する際につづったメモをブログに残しておこうと思う。

2月13日

私はフライトが好きだ。

少しの間、学校の読み物から離れて、もっと大きな社会問題、趣味について思いをはべらせることができる。本を読んだり、将来について考えたり。ふと頭によぎる日常の大切な問題も、忙しい毎日に取り残されていることが多いからだ。

米国の選挙戦も始まり、イスラム教批判をよく耳にするようになった。イラク戦争の根底から目をそらし、額にはめようとしているように個人的に思える。

中国オリンピックが近づき、中国経済の成長を見ながら、アジアの小さな島国、日本の強みが弱っているように感じる。先の元安倍首相から福田総理になったこともあり、日本の未来について、現在についてすら不透明の日々が続いている。

そして熊本空港への離陸時、飛行機の窓から見える風景に、日本の勢力をひしひしと感じる。上空から見るとンクリートだらけの東京、東京湾を行きかう貨物船から経済の力を感じる。日本がどうやってここまで来たのか、日本が今どうやって動いているのか、知らないことばかりだ。

今回人生で初めて「働く」という目的でアメリカからの一時帰国。父の病院なので、一般の人から言わせれば、まだ学生のお遊びに入るだろう。

獣医学に関しても知らないことが多くある。正直学びたくてたまらない。

大学6年がすべてが無駄だったとは言わないが、多くはそうであったと思う。ただ、獣医師免許を日本でとり、学術の世界にほんの少しだけ門戸が開けたことは良かったと思う。

と、メモの写しはここまでとして、話が見えなくなってきたのでまとめようと思う。

私の目標としては、アメリカでPhDをとり、かつ獣医内科学の専門医になり、さらに社会情勢についても積極的に知識を取り入れられる人でいたい、ということだ。25歳は少し遅いスタートかもしれないが、私なりのスピードで、しかし時間を無駄にしないように、目標を達成していこうと思う。

The Role of Veterinary Medicine in Public Health

1. Introduction

The recent epidemics of severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus (SARS) in China, West Nile virus in the U.S., and avian influenza in Asia have grabbed the attention of the general public and scientific community on veterinary pathogens. These epidemics made us realize the importance of public health, which is defined as a science to prevent rather than treat a disease through surveillance of cases and the promotion of healthy behaviors. Public health is the science and art of promoting health, preventing disease and prolonging healthy life through organized efforts of society. In addition to these activities, in many cases treating a disease can be vital to preventing it in others, such as during an outbreak of an infectious disease. Vaccination programs are examples of public health measures. Curiously, all of resent epidemics are the infectious diseases caused by zoonitic viruses, which can infect both humans and animals. The most unique character of viruses is that they can replicate themselves only by infecting a host cell, therefore cannot reproduce on their own. At the most basic level, viruses consist of genetic material, either DNA or RNA, contained within a protective protein coat called a capsid. They infect a wide variety of organisms: both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. The simple structure and wide range of its hosts including humans make virus infection complicated. Many people, even the medical doctors who were treating infected patients died from previous epidemics. People realized the high mortality of zoonotic infectious diseases and importance of tracking back the source of the epidemics, which most of the times is animals. Although many people say veterinary and human medicine are equally important science, based on these characters of zoonotic infectious disease and public health, veterinary medicine can play more important roles than human medicine for public health because of its unique strength in comparative medicine that can deal with much wider range of the health related issues (Eyre 40).

2. Veterinary Medicine as Preventative Science

Generally speaking, humans’ lives are more important than animals’. Therefore, when zoonotic epidemics happen, people tend to focus on the number of people who were suffered from the infectious disease, and many people think veterinary medicine can not play important role more than human medicine when a pandemic happens in human society. It is true that veterinarians can not treat patients suffered from an infectious disease, however, those people ignore the motto of public health: to prevent rather than treat a disease through surveillance of cases. Public health states that to recognize whether human and animal outbreaks were simultaneous would provide important information for identifying the causative pathogens and developing control strategies to both humans and animals. For example, physicians treating the initial West Nile virus patients in New York City in 1999 might have benefited if they knew that for the previous month and concurrently, veterinarians in the surrounding area had been seeing dozens of dying crows with neurological symptoms similar to those of the affected humans (Kahn 556). In addition, public health also states the importance of vaccination programs as their measures. Studies on animal papillomaviruses of rabbits, cattle, and dogs have provided the intellectual background for the identification of human papillomaviruses as ethological agents of the overwhelming majority of cervical cancer and some coetaneous cancers. Most interestingly, the success of the recently highly publicized vaccine against human papillomavirus is based on the proof of a principle gained in vaccine development against animal papillomaviruses (Palmarini 131)

3. Veterinary Medicine as Basic Science

Some people would say veterinary medicine can not play an important role more than human medicine because veterinary medicine can not be applied to human medicine because of the genetic difference, just like the fact that we can not transplant organs or deliberate mating between different species because of the species barrier resulting in immunoresistance by the genetic difference. However, many researches showed the opposite results. Feline leukemia virus was taken as an example that retroviruses horizontally transmitted could cause tumors in out bred animal species; this fuelled the chase for human retroviruses, eventually leading to the discovery of human T lymphotropic virus. Many viruses of domestic animals have also inspired, directly or indirectly, discoveries of related human viruses. In addition, early studies on HIV-1, now the new Lentivirus prototype and the most studied virus in human history, in the 1980s took some advantage on data accumulated on maedi-visna virus, which is the lentivirus infection of sheep studied from 1940s, and another animal lentivirus, equine infectious anemia virus (Palmarini 132). Moreover, the effective vaccine for Feline Immunodeficiency virus, Fel-O-Vax FIV, will have an important impact on veterinary medicine and human medicine in addition to being used as a small animal AIDS model for humans (Uhl et al. 113).

4. Veterinary Medicine for Public Health

The number of people having companion animals has been increasing, and people have started to seek quality of life even to their companion animals. Therefore, many people want veterinary medicine to focus more on companion animal medicine than comparative medical research and livestock medicine, which are important areas of veterinary medicine to collaborate with public health. As the result, veterinary schools shifted their focus so that it matches the social needs. However, just like what happened in human medicine, this shift has caused fewer numbers of veterinary students to pursue research careers. In addition, comparative medicine program have been shifting from a research to service orientation that limits veterinarians’ research involvement to bring primarily caretakers for laboratory animals (Kahn 560). This is clearly limiting the possibility of veterinary medicine to public health. Research on pathogens of veterinary interests also needs to be fostered, not only for its direct relevance to animal health, but for its significance to comparative medicine and public health also (Palmarini 132). For example, the first hint that kuru, the first recognized human transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), and scrapie, the first disease described within the group of TSEs of sheep, might be similar diseases was made serendipitously by a veterinary pathologist, William Hadlow, who was attending an exhibit on kuru at the Wellcome Medical Museum in London (Palmarini 132). This sort of linking the idea of veterinary medicine to public health can be done only by veterinarians educated in the medicine which has the strength in comparative medical research and livestock medicine.

5. Conclusion

Research found that zoonotic diseases were twice as likely to be associated with emerging or newly discovered infections as non-zoonotic pathogens and that viruses were the zoonotic pathogens most likely to emerge. RNA viruses, in particular, have been identified as highly likely to emerge. These agents include West Nile virus, avian influenza virus, and severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus (Kahn 558). Many zoonoses attract the public’s attention because of the high death rate associated with the infections (Hubalek 403). The understanding of complex emerging diseases need collaborative efforts between experts in public health, the environment, and animal health, where veterinary scientists can provide a critical contribution. However, most people do not view veterinarians as a source of information for human health (Grant 159). This situation hindered communications between veterinarians and physicians who will be involved in the outbreak of response at the basic level. We have to recognize the importance of veterinary medicine in public health because it is the only science that has broad range of species in it to study. Therefore, of course veterinary and human medicine are equally important science, however, veterinary medicine can contribute more efficiently than human medicine when it comes to the subject about public health, because of its strength in comparative medicine.

My First House in the U.S.

I forgot to tell you about my new house! This is my official new house(apartment) in the U.S.
It's a four-plex, really old (built before 1987) and noisy neighbors. But I'm excited about this house because this is my first house in the U.S. and I did all the paper work by myself.

日本のパトカーはどうかしらないんだけど、アメリカのパトカーの後部座席はプラスチックみたいな固いやつで覆われていた。なぜかというと、よっぱらいがおしっこしたり、嘔吐したりするためだ。なるほどー。
多くの学生は、悪いことをしたひとは、心地よい乗り心地は身分不相応だからだと想像したが、もっと物理的に理にかなった理由だったのねっということに。

Today, we had to discuss in our listening 300 class about the definition of culture,how we are interested in other culture, what we found in U.S. that are similar and different from our home country, and how tolerant we think we are.

I was asking question to Kazakh students about their religion because I said I'm very interested in other cultures. Most of Kazakh students told me that they are Muslim but not serious about praying or their food like my Muslim roommate from Libya(who doesn't come to one of the afternoon class on Friday because he wants to or has to pray). I asked if they have thought to leave their religion because they know that they are not serious about being Muslim, but they all say no, and one of the Kazakh boy who was next to me said it's because the Kazakh society expect you to be Muslim. I wanted to ask what he think about the social expectation on their religion but our teacher, Mr. McLoed, joined in our group because we were in the front. At that time, the Kazakh boy asked me I ask about their religion because I want to be a Muslim. I said no, but I want to know what people believe in it, so I can at least show some understanding to other culture but not just saying, oh that's so wrong or crazy.

When I said that, Mr. McLeod started to talk about cultural relativism and female circumcision in one of the countries in Africa. He asked us if we should do something to stop the crucial ritual that has been going on in the area for long time and considered as their culture, or we should not do anything because it's their culture. I said we should not do anything because it's their religion and I think they should change when they want to and not by outsiders. They know what is right or wrong but they just need time to convince their majority Mr. McLeod said we should because it's crucial and sometime lethal procedure on girls and there is no scientific benefit from it like the circumcision on boys and because he thinks that we have responsibility to save those poor girls and to do "right" thing. I wasn't quite sure how he thinks that people should fulfill their responsibility to others but it sounds really pushy when he said that.

Maybe that's American way of thinking that they have responsibility to change other to do better or right.

Oh, my god, I can't believe it takes me about 2 hours to write this blog. That's how poor my writing skills are....

Men and Women, Which are smarter

This is a writing subject that my composition teacher came up the other day in class. This is not official subject for my essay assignment or anything, but I want think about the supporting reasons for both sides.

At first, I thought that there is no absolute answer to the smartness between men and women, but of course the teacher said you have to pick one side for academic writing practice. I am a woman, so of course I wanted to take women's side but the funny thing is I couldn't come up with three supporting reasons for that... I was thinking about the definition of smartness and three possible reasons for my statement.

I asked Fumiko about what she would write, and she said she wants to say women are smarter too, but she would write men are smarter. She gave me three suportive reasons for that too. 1) historically, men have better job that women, 2)men are good at focusing on one issue, while women tend to think about surroundings, 3)men are good at working under a lot of stress. I these are totally right. But I disagree with her main point. and she does too.

But if I just insist on saying I disagree on this statement but cannot come up with reasons, I will sound uneducated.. so if anyone have good reason to prove that women are smarter than men, or know good book to read about this, let me know.

I am a veterinarian from Japan, interested in learning more about veterinary infectious disease and cultures in other countries in U.S. There are two things that have a strong affect on me, my father, and my hometown. My father, who is also a vet, has had an important influence on my life. He has shown me his work, woke up earlier, and went to bed later than me since I was little. His passion and curiosity for his work and academic area made me think that I want to be like my father. I became a vet this March and came here to prepare for my application to graduate schools to study more about veterinary infectious diseases. My hometown is Kumamoto prefecture in Japan. It is known for agricultural products such as the Guinness size orange, rush and horse meats. In a typical countryside like my hometown, people expect you to be like everybody else. I have been in U.S for 3 years since I was 3 years old, so I have been categorized as a weird girl since I came back to Japan. I like to be unique but hate to be judged. I want to understand people who are different from me, and I have started to be interested in the lingual and cultural differences with other countries.

おととい、アメリカのテキサスに着いた。
14日の月曜日からの語学学校に通うためだ。

ん～、実際のところ、あんまり「やっと、来たぞ！」という実感がない。。。

これは獣医師国家試験に合格して、ギャビンの所に居候していた時から感じていたのだが、
すごく今の自分が、何者でもないような気がしてきた。

何の肩書きもなく、何にも属してない。また、この先の行く末も不確か極まりなく。。。
こういう気持ちになるのは、初めてなので、しばらくあがいて見るのも良いかと？

昨日の夜、Texas A&M Universityの語学学校への合格通知がきた。これは、学力を測るものでもなんでもないので、案外スムーズにいった。これで、アメリカに行くきっかけができた。

ただ、問題はアメリカに行った後、それをどう大学院合格に向けて活用するかだと思った。夏学期の4ヶ月、無駄にできないと思う。暮らすために電話線もひき、銀行口座もつくり、携帯も購入するだろう。生活に最低線必要なことを、当たり前に行うための手続きを経験することになると思う。これは私にとって、とっても良い経験になると思う。事務的なことは日本でもしたことがなかったからだ。

それにまして、この語学学校にいる間に、大学院合格へどう繋げていくかが、私の目標だ。
研究室、動物病院でのボランティア活動も良いだろうし、GREでもっと良い点を取ることも大学院へもっと近づけると思う。

はぁ、高校生最後のころから、考えていた留学、アメリカの生活が目の前に迫っていると、こんなに簡単に始まっていいのかとも思う。まぁ、6年間は長かったが、きっとアメリカの生活を維持するのが難しいのだろう。

お陰さまで、第58回獣医師国家試験の合格者欄に、自分の受験番号1503を見つけることができました。

それを見つけたときは、感無量の一言。「あぁ、本当に私は日本で獣医師になれるんだぁ」と感じました。

今まで、お世話になった、全ての方々に感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです！

国家試験　第二日

二日目もショックのあまり、ブログにすることを忘れていた。。。。

二日目も6時くらいに起き、試験会場の早稲田大学へ行った。
昨日のこともあったので、どんな細かい質問がされるか分からないので、直前まで勉強することにした。
私は酪農学園大学の模試問題をといていた。

問題C、60問、2時間の問題だ。最初は見覚えのある問題だったが、どんどん今までの傾向の異なる問題へ。今までは出ていなかった、解剖の問題がでた。いつもは病理、組織学として出てくるのだが。。。昨日の不信感からか、すべての選択肢が正解に見えてくる。

問題D、60問、2時間の問題だ。見覚えのある問題が多かったが、ちんぷんかんぷんの問題もあった。

終わったとき、「あぁ～、もう引き返せないんだぁ」と思った。これで落ちたら、また一年。受かったら、サクラサク。。。。

帰り道には、もうみんな言葉数少なかった。いつも楽観主義の私がこうなんだもの。無理はないよなとおもった。
あとは、農水省と天に任せるのみ。。。

受からせてください！！！！！

国家試験　第一日

朝は6時に起き、未だ実感のわかない思いとともに会場入りした。早稲田大学だ。
理系とちがって、第9条、自衛隊、反戦についての手作り看板が構内のいたるところに張ってあって、文系らしさがすごくでていた。

まず問題A、100問、2時間30分で解く問題だ。
はっきりいって、死んだ。。。　以前と、少なくともここ4年と全然傾向が異なっていた。
選択肢があいまいで、細かいものが多く、分かる疾病も分からなくなってくる。。。
泣きたい、でも分からなさ加減に笑えもした。

お昼になり、友人にそのことを告げると同じような感想。

ついで問題B、80問、2時間で解く問題だ。
Aが難しいから、これは簡単になるだとうと、なんとなく思っていたが、これも死んだ。。。
ただ、伝染病のあたり、解剖のところは、自信のある回答ができた。

終わってみると、連続した、今まで過去にない問題に、他大のひとも不安の色を隠せない感じだった。
今年は合格率が悪くなるのか？大きな下駄を履かせてくれるのか？わたしはボーダーよりしたなのか？！

ほんとに、農水省なにがしたいのよっ！
私たちを落としたら、困るのあんただかんね！　
。。。農水のばかぁぁ。もっと簡単な問題だしてよぅぅ

獣医国家試験　前々日

獣医国家試験まであと2日を残すところとなった。

今の心境を記録に残そうと、そして、いいことばっかり書くのも公平じゃないなと思って、書いている。

今の心境は、いつものテスト前と変わらず、ちょいと緊張とちょっと気が抜けてるのと同時進行だ。ただ、やっぱりテストが国家試験なだけに、落ちた先輩を知ってるがゆえに、万が一が近くに感じられる。

これが終わって、受かっていたら、やっと自分の周りはじめた歯車が加速する気がする。
どうか、どうか、マークミスとか凡ミスしませんように！

数学力

「国家の品格」という本のなかで、現在の日本の子供の数学力が、アメリカの子供の数学力と大差なくなってきていることが書かれていた。アメリカの大学院も日本の学生に対して、冷ややかな目で見るようになっているという。

これが本当であるならば、日本の先行きが不安だし、将来外国人と結婚しようとも、自分の子供は日本で教育を受けさせたいという私の希望がかなえられるか不安になってきた。。。

子供の学力の二極化、小学校からの英語教育やこのような情報が、ゆとり教育の反動といわれるものなんだろうなと思う。
（ゆとり教育とは、平成11年前後（小渕総理大臣のころ）に始まった、完全週5日制の義務教育のこと）

大掃除

遅ればせながら、最近週末大掃除をする。

テレビもないし、部屋をきれいにすることで、国家試験の勉強も気持ちよくできるし、もうここに残れないというプレッシャーを自分に与えることで、国家試験に向けての意欲を増幅させる狙いだ。

必要な本は、実家に送り、いらないものはどんどん捨てていっている。
恥ずかしながら、お布団を６ヶ月以上干していなかったことについて、反省。。。（don't judge me.... I know I'm disgusting）　
布団を干すことは、大掃除に含まれないのかもしれないが、わたしには大掃除と同じエネルギーを必要とする。（ちゅまり、グータラってことなの）

片付けながら、お姉ちゃんの行ってることは正しいなと思う。片付けると気持ち良い。
細木かず子が言うように、「片付けたら良い運気が入ってくる」ような気もしてくる。（だって久しぶりに窓開けたんだもん！！）

情緒、形式

前にも書いたように、私は今多くの人が唱える合理主義、論理主義に対して疑問がある。

かといって反米に走り、日本人が重んじる、形式、情緒たるものに身を捧げるつもりもない。

私は日本が大好きだ、というとウソになるが、
私は日本人で良かったと思う。

無宗教でいて無神論者でないところや、衣食の文化や、アジア人らしい身なりも、世界と比べると小数派でとっても気持ちが良い。これは田舎から出てきて、都会の人と比べて方言を持っているときに感じる優越感にとても似ていると思う。

京都出身の友人が面白い話をしてくれた。
日本文化の真髄は、人をもてなすということだ。
そしてそれを極めるためにお茶の作法や華道が生まれたと。
しかし、京都の欠点は、お客様にするべき作法を、隣近所や友人関係まで応用したところだという。
だから近所づきあいをとても慎重にする必要があり、とても重荷だと嘆いていた。

私はこの話を聞いて、アメリカの合理主義と同じことが日本で起きているなと感じた。
日本文化がもつ作法や考えは、人間関係を作るうえで重宝がられるものだが、どの次元の人間関係に用いるかで、自分自身の身に多大な負担を掛け兼ねない。

私の精神を病んでる友人を見ると、幼少期の親のプレッシャーから対人関係に多大に慎重になり、それがゆえに悪循環し、対人関係を築けないという人が多いように感じる。

国際化の中、アメリカの合理主義（実力主義ともいえるかもしれない？）を盲目的に信じ込んだ社会の期待を受け、かつ日本文化を捨て去ることができずにいる人が多く日本にいると思う。

論理的に考え、今考える中で最良の方向に、柔軟に自分を変えることも大事だと私は思う。

論理的、合理的

今、日本国憲法改正の動きに向けて、多くの本を読もうと思っているところだ。
3月には国家試験、大学院への願書手続きなども重なっているので、自分の答えを出せるには時間がかかりそうだが、手始めとして、自分の簡単な考えを書きたいと思う。

私はとても弱い人間だと、最近感じる。
間違いを犯したくないがゆえに、とても論理的に物事を考える。
常に客観的でいるためだ。
感情というものは、出すべきときに出さないと、ただの毒であるとも思うからだ。

論理的に物事を考えると書いたが、論理主義、合理主義の代表とされる、アメリカが果たして今本当に論理的、合理的に感じることができるだろうか？世界の多くの人は、そうでないことに気が付いていると思う。

私はそれがなぜか知りたい。
合理主義がいつから合理主義でなくなったのか。（少なくとも私にはそう見える）

私の今の時点の考えでは、合理的になるところを間違えてるのではないか、と思う。
科学は普遍性を求めるがゆえに、ひとつの論理を応用することが多くある。そしてそれが違う場合にも同じようにして成り立つことが、論理的に正しい、真理として美しいとされる。
そして、その考えに基づいて、人間社会すべてを論理的に処理しようと考えたのが、アメリカではないかと、感じる。

私は論理的に物事を処理することが悪いとは思わない。
私は精神的に弱い友人や、家族を見て、常に客観性を失わない論理主義でいることの大切さを感じる。
それと同時に、論理主義を彼らに勧めようとは思わない。彼らにそれを受け入れることは今できないのは明らかだからだ。

私は論理性の限界を知りたくて、精神病の友達と付き合っているのかもしれない。

人がこんなに多様化する時代に、論理一本で人の気持ちを動かしたり、説得しようとするのは、難しいのではないだろうか。
それに気づいているといいながら、実行できている論理主義の人も少ないのではないかと感じる。
今まであった数少ないアメリカ人から得る、傲慢な印象はここから来ていると思う。

私は自分が弱いから、自分が精神を崩したときに、論理主義によって人間の片隅にも置けないような扱いを受けるのがいやだから、このような理解を示したいと思っているのだろうか。。。時々、自分がただの良い人になりたいのか、そこから何かを得たいのか分からなくなってくるときがある。

二週間はあっという間に過ぎてしまった。
最後の金曜日に日本の獣医学教育システムについて、パワーポイントで説明した後、獣医学科のTシャツを贈呈してくれた。
帰りたくない～!!!

この二週間、多くのことを学んだ。その中で最も大切だと思ったのは、自分のやることの意義を再確認することを忘れないということである。お金のかかる診断検査、使用する薬物には科学的根拠のある理由がしっかりしていなければ、飼い主にも説明できないし、慣習として科学的意義を見失ってしまう恐れがあるからだ。これは普段の生活にも応用できると思う。

彼女自身猫が大好きで、とても猫のことを知っている。先生は彼女の意見を聞いてから猫の処置を考えるほどだ。

わたしったら、日本人だわ。手を組んじゃって。

楽しいときはあっという間に過ぎてしまった。
この経験を次につなげられたらいいと思う。良い先生、人たちと出会ったと思う。

My English is still a mess and there are a lot of parts that I translated directory from what I wrote (direct translations are always no good....), so you might not understand what exactly what I meant but I'm gonna try.

It always keeps staying in one part of my mind and I can't say "you are completely wrong!" so far.

I don’t have particular religion, but I think that is because I was raised in Japanese culture that has respects for multitude spirits in it.

After I got more chances to go to U.S. and I've got into Vet school and became more close to science, it become more frequently for me to think about Christianity.

For me, what the Bible tries to say is full of common senses to me. When I read about Buddhism and Shinto, they’re all telling us about “what is right things to do”, for example, “If you give something good to others, you will take good things back from others.”

My huge question is why do we need God to do the right things.

We have been living for over thousands of years after the Bible had written. We can learn what is morally right from proverbs or instructions of our ancestors without reading religious doctrine or the Bible. I haven't needed religion to execute right thing in my life so far.

But, after I came back from a church meeting a lot of people who still believe what happened in thousands of years ago, blessing the God and each other, sing holy songs and pray for the God, it came in my mind, what is the difference between me and them? What is the gap that makes me and them different?

I have to say, I love to go to Church. I don't even know why. The chorus makes me cry most of the time when I go to church. Well, I used to cry for 3 hours at my friend's concert, so I am definitely easy to be touched... But at the same time, I think singing in front of people requires strong determination to do, and is based on their strong beliefs. It's not like little kids made to sing in front of their parents. Probably I was moved by their unpredictable strong beliefs...

This looks pretty much like the Japanese situation right now. About nuclear weapon and Self Defense Force. We can interpret a lot of different things from one article of one constitution, but a lot of Japanese, including me want to keep not to have nuclear weapon and be unarmed.

I want to ask a lot of people about their Christianity and/or their faiths, and want to have opinion from them. Japanese, American even from other people who believe in different religion.

わたしのなかで、ある一定の立場を保っている宗教だ。
わたしは無宗教だ。それは日本文化にある八百万の神を無意識に感じているための無宗教だと思う。

自分の過去、姉の境遇から、アメリカの文化と接する機会が増えてから、また、科学の世界に接する機会が増えてから、キリスト教について考える機会は増えていった。

わたしが思うに、聖書の教えの部分は、私の中で常識的なことばかりだ。仏教、神道の教えを読んでも人に与え、そうすればいつか自分に返ってくるなど、いわゆる「良い事」をといている。
わたしのなかの大きな疑問は、良いことをするのに、なぜ宗教がいるのか？ということだ。

私たちは聖書ができてから、何千年後に生きている人間だ。倫理的に正しいことなど、経典を開かなくても、聖書を読まなくても、ことわざ・昔からの教えとして学ぶことができる。わたしは、今のところわたしのなかに善意を実行するのに宗教を必要としていない。

しかし、今日も教会に行って思った。こんなにも多くの人々が何千年前の出来事を信じて、聖歌を歌い、祈っている。彼らとわたしの違いは何なのか？この日教会にいる人たちの中にもキリスト教徒になるか迷っている人が多くいるらしい。その狭間は何なのだろうか？

ただ、わたしは教会に行くのが嫌いじゃない。聖歌を歌う同年代の人たちが私を涙ぐませることも多くある。彼らの信念に感動させられるのか？わたしは友達の演奏会でも3時間なき続けた人間なので、涙もろいこともあるだろうが。人前に出て歌うというのは、それなりの考えがあってできることだと思う。子供の演奏会とは違うのだ。私はその計り知れない思いに感動させられてしまう。

これは、日本の核保有、自衛隊保有の事柄に少し当てはまる気がする。いろんな解釈が憲法文面からでき、いろんな考えがあるが、基本的信念、核の不保持、非武装を保っている。

この類の質問は常にいろんな人に投げかけて、何でも良いから意見を聞きたいと思っている。日本人でもアメリカ人でも、さらには別の宗教の人まで。
そういう意味でもアメリカというのはさまざまな人種、文化の人がいて、機会が多く得られると思う。

☆クリスマス☆

クリスマスツリーの飾りつけを始めた。お姉ちゃんのとは違って偽木で、折れば形を整えられるタイプだ。これも初体験。
リズのポリシーは母から受け継いだ、色鮮やかで、ピカピカしたツリーだそうだ。
これでもかとオーナメントをつけていった。

今年リズのお母さんは5～７つのツリー(生木と偽木)を飾るらしく、二代続けて、このようなツリーが作られている。

この楽しい季節に、これてよかったと思った。
わたしは育ちが日本なので、誰かがすごくハイテンションに楽しんでないと、飾りつけはとても一人では楽しめそうもない。。。でも、このやりすぎのツリーも眺めてると、かわいい思ってしまう。
クリスマスっていいなぁ☆

最初の１週間

早いもので、もう５日経ってしまった。
最初は、言いようもない不安があって、耐えられるか心配だったが、高嶺からの刺激を楽しんでいる。
父が言っていたことは正しかった。アメリカの獣医学教育システムは日本のと比べるとすばらしい。

日本の何が問題かというと、臨床教育が低いということだ。先生たちがそのような教育を受けていないのだから、教育システムも良くなるわけもないが、生徒が実際に大学病院で学ぶケースは、外科や内科の研究室に入っていない限り少ない。外科や内科の研究室に入ったとしても、実際に症例を担当し、飼い主とのコミュニケーションを学ぶのは、実際に就職してからのものとなり、やりかたも就職先で変わってくる。
就職先で訓練を受け、自分で勉強した人が、「～の名人」となり、有名となるが、それは学校教育が生み出したものではない。
なので、学生の時に、自分が学んだことが、実際どういう利益となるのかわかりにくい。多くの学生が臨床にいくことはわかっているのだが、そこまで情熱を感じられないといっているのを聞くのも無理はないとおもう。その職業が実際どういうものかビジョンがつかめていないのだ。

ドイツも５年生の獣医学で、アンダーグラジュエイトのシステムがなく、臨床経験も大学生の時は日本と同様少ないという。
しかしそのような獣医学教育を卒業した生徒は、アメリカの教育システムの中、多くの症例を見て、担当先生から信頼を得る獣医学生である。私が見ていても、彼女は何でも知っているようにみえる。病気の生理、診断方法、治療薬・プランまで、ほとんどの症例で彼女はできている。

私もここで、教育を受けたい。
教えることもできる獣医師なりたいとおもった。
私はまじめだし、勉強もおそらく不得意ではない。言語の問題をさらに向上させればこの国で長く教育を受けることができるかもしれない。

すごーい。　本当にアメリカの獣医学教育はすごいなと思った。(テキサスだけではないと良いが)
まず、学生の責任が全然日本とことなる。私の病院実習では観察が多かった。レポートがあり、カルテと本を写せば終わる実習だった。

しかし、ここでは生徒が先生と一組になって患者をみる。主訴をうけとり、実際に猫の生体検査はじめ必要な検査をし、診断を下し、治療プランを立てる。自分で主訴を聞いたのち、本などを読み、自分なりの診断、計画を立てる。そしてそれをチームの先生に話す。先生と討論、アドバイスを受けた後、記録を自分で作り(これはオンラインで見れる資料となる)、それを飼い主に電話で連絡する。これはすべて学生の仕事となっている。入院患者の点滴、給餌などをアニテクに頼むのにも、動物の履歴を書き、診断と必要事項を書かなければいけない。そして、先生がもっとも力を入れているのが、退院の際の手続きだ。生徒は自分が担当する患畜の飼い主と自己紹介をかわし、診察室に案内する。先生が来るまで、簡単にすべての検査結果、診断、今後のプランを飼い主と話す。

そして、ここでは不真面目な生徒には必ずペナルティーがつく。実習の最後には、担当の先生より評価がくだり、問題がある生徒は評価の前に先生から治すべき点を指導されるらしい。担当者はそれを評価する前に知らせなければならない。その生徒が治す気があれば、改良するからだ。参加姿勢、詳細への気配りなどが注目されるらしい。

そして、ラウンドという、いまだに何の意味かわからない、予定があり、そこでは与えられたテーマについて、生徒それぞれ考え、先生にプレゼンし、みんなで討論する。
今回はFeLV、FIVについてで、偶然にも私の興味のある分野だった。私たちが受け取ったタスクは昔または最近先生が実際に担当した患畜をもとにしている。
最初に先生が話したことは、FeLV、FIVエライザテストが何を測っているものか、p27とか詳細わたり、私たちに質問しながら教えてくれた。抗原を調べているのか、抗体を調べているのか、IFAの重要性は、ワクチンの鋭敏性はどのように定義されるか、潜伏感染の定義はなどである。そんな、内科の裏側にある、基礎学的なことを求められたことは、特に感染症の分野においてはない。臨床の先生がそこまで詳しいことにびっくりした。

ここでは今日一日で私が見たことを書き切れそうもなく、明日も新患が６頭予約が入っていて、忙しくなるらしい。私たちは遅れてるとはいわないが、生徒の数に比べ、教育者が圧倒的に少ないと思った。こっちでは９０人一学年の獣医学科に莫大な領域の大学病院と、かたや日本では１５０人の生徒に小さな大学病院である。日大にはアニテクもおらず、なんで患者が死なないか、不思議でならない。

テキサス

フロリダでの先生たちとの出会いを終え、やっとテキサスに着いた。

大きい！ダラスというところからカレッジステーションという町まで行くのに2時間のフライト。羽田から熊本に行くよりも長くかかっている。テキサスは日本より大きいとみた。すごいなぁ。
途中で、イラクより戻ってきたアメリカ兵と出くわし、待合席の人たちがいっせいに拍手をしていた。うゎ～って感じ。わたしは、彼らが何をしたのか、あまり支持していないので、自分のゲートに急いだ。日本人には兵隊が自国を守るという気持ちが抜けているのかなぁと考えながら。

部屋を貸してくれる人は、YokoMiyamotoという紙を持って到着口に立ってくれた。実は時間を2時間早く教えていて、謝ったところ、「1時間しか待ってなくて、大丈夫よ」といってくれた。ドイツ人を待ってたときに、入国審査で止められ、長く待ったことがあったらしい。
ボーイフレンドのビルと一緒に来てくれて、結婚はしてないらしい。

インフルエンザにかかっているということで、「家に着いたらすぐ寝させてくれる？」ってきいて、きて「どうそどうぞ」っていった。タミフルを服用してるらしく、日本での若い男の子に起こった事件を教えた。ビルがニュースで見てたらしく、でも女の人の報告はないって言っといた。

夕ご飯はビルが作ってくれて、ハリーポッターを見た。子供の映画なのに何をしゃべっているのか全然わからず、適当に見ていた。いきなり食べるのもなんなので、「いただきます」って日本語で言ったら、なんていう意味？って聞かれた。直訳は命を食べます、ということで、フレンチの「ボナペティ」と同じように使われると教えてあげた。
それからちょっと自己紹介みたいになって、「やっぱりテキサスの人はブッシュをサポートしてるんですか？」と質問した。
彼女たち2人はブッシュのことが嫌いで、ビルは「彼のお父さんは良い大統領だったけどね。そういう理由でサポートしている人は多いんじゃないかな、僕は間違ってると思うけど。」だって。
いろんなことを話しながら、日本についてどう思っているとか、聞いてみた。なぜなら核戦力の議論で、自衛という面で日本が劣っていることが、明らかになった今、見下されてるのかな、と興味があったからだ。
そしたら、アメリカ人は日本に米軍基地があることさえ知らないことが多いという。ビルは第2次世界大戦について多くの本を読んだらしいが、日米安全保障条約に基づく米軍基地の日本滞在を知らなかったと教えてくれた。歴史の授業で習うものではなく、個人的に興味がある人だけが知っていることだろうね、とのこと。

んー、考えさせられる答え。それに彼らがくれた答えは、ギャビンがくれたものとそう変わらないことにも驚いた。彼らは、このような話もできる人たちでよかったと思う。

緊張！

11月28日の朝、ノースウエストでのすばらしいフライトでサンフランシスコに着いた。
その足で姉のドライブでカリフォルニア州立大学、デービス校へ、推薦状を書いてくれた人に挨拶をしに行った。

その後ウィル君とお昼を食べた後、姉とクリスマスツリーを買いに行って、姉のところで泊まった後、11月29日朝8時30分の飛行機に乗った。コンチネンタルだと思っていたら、U.Sエアラインだった。

そして、乗り換えも含め、計7時間弱のフライトを終え、フロリダのGainesville Inn and Suitesというモーテルについた。ノースカロライナのシャーロット空港に着いたときから、やはりカリフォルニアとは違う雰囲気があった。まず白人が圧倒的に多い。外国人はインド人くらいしかいなかった。なんとなく見られてる気がする。空港は甘いにおいで包まれていて、ほんとの異国だった。ドキドキ！

一人で、アメリカに来て、アメリカ横断なんて、人って目標があると、色々やってしまうんだなぁと、正直びっくり＆緊張している。

フロリダの空港からタクシー(土地柄なのか運転手が年寄りなのかずっと40マイル/hってどうよ？！)でホテルに着いて、ホテルの予約シートを見せると、いきなり、「うちにはパソコンないから、あなたの情報着てないよ」だと！通常だとオンラインで予約したら、その会社がファックスを送るか、不安だったら自分で電話して予約が成立してるか確認しなくちゃいけないらしい。野球シーズンだったら部屋なかったよといわれ、ラッキーと一安心した。
受付の人は、色々質問してきて、「日本からだねぇ、遠いねぇ、何できたの？」見たいな事を言ってきた。「ここは東京のホテルと違ってぼろいけど、雨風はしのげるからね、ごめんね」みたいな事もいってきた。フロントは思ったよりきれいだったので、「そんなことないよ、思ったより高級感ある」と答えた。
が、部屋に行きながら思った。車が止まっている。ドアの前に並ぶように。。。あれ？これ映画で見るモーテルなんじゃないの？と初めて疑問がわく。
部屋に入って、電気をつけると、化粧台の扉が思いっきり壊れている。ねずみとが出たらいやなので、触らず放置。モーテルに違いない。。

気を取り直して、パソコンをセットして、フロリダ大学の大学院コーディネーターの人にメールを送り、日本大学の先生からのメールに返信した。この日は10時くらいに寝た。

11月30日び朝は3時くらいにうとうと目が覚め、4時におきた。

今日朝8時45分くらいに、大学院コーディネーターの先生が迎えに来てくれることになっている。フライトにお金もかかったし、この機会を無駄にしないようにしたいと思う。

お姉ちゃんの、変わらない静かなサポートにすごく感謝した。

自分の意見がまだはっきりしない。

日本が一つの国家として独立するためには。。。

アメリカの核の傘下から独立し、独自の自衛力をもち、国際的な発言権を獲得していくか。
アメリカの核の傘下にあり、平和論を語っていくか。

日本が核を持たないというのは、ただの平和論なのだろうか。わたしはまた、アメリカ的な考えに洗脳されているのだろうか。わたしは、この国で教育を受け、自然に、唯一の被爆国として、戦争は二度と起こしてはいけないもの、核はないに越したことないこと、というに自然に考えるようになってきた。これは誰かによる洗脳だろうか。日本国の教育、文化の影響だろうか。それすら、はっきりしない。

先日のテレビで、石原都知事が、現代の子供は弱くなったといっていた。戦後の日本国民と違って、困難に立ち向かう力がなくなっていると。「時代が違う。」「子供が携帯をもつ、インターネットの普及といった科学は後戻りできない。」と久米宏アナウンサーは言った。「石原都知事の時々におわせる、戦時中戦後に戻ろうというような、雰囲気が気に食わない」とも言いました。

わたしは、石原都知事が言ったようなようなことは、多くの人間が気づいていることだと思う。久米宏さんの意見もである。わたしは、その先を彼らに話してほしかった。

今、戦後60年の平和の時代に、その代償として、子供達、社会のありかたにひずみが出てきているなら、それを昔と比べるだけでなく、昔から学び、今の時代にあったやり方を、少なくとも現都知事の石原さんには触れていただきたかった。

わたしの拒食症の友人と触れていて感じる。科学がいかに進歩しても、それが有効なときと（これが科学が進歩した理由でもあるが）、有効でないときもある、と。どんなに精神安定剤があっても、拒食症の専門病院があっても、彼女が実際に足を運ぶまでは、身近な人の、忍耐強い支えが必要である。ものすごく自分の時間をとられる。しかしながら、わたしはできる限り、彼女に与えられるものがあれば、与えたいと思う。つまらない悩み、実際の病気の話、から時間があるときには聞いている。
それは、実は、わたしの拒食症という精神病の一つへの興味というのもあり、わたしがそのような患者に会う機会も、深く接する機会もめったにないという気持ちから、わたしをひきつけている。
わたしは彼女と接していて、得るものは多いと感じる。

人と有益な時間を過ごせたらいいなと思う。

「核保有について、議論が必要」
麻生太郎（外相）、中川昭一（自民党政調会長)の発言が問題となっている。

北朝鮮のテポドン発射、核実験開始宣言に伴い、日本は自国の自衛力について、深く問い始めた。

わたしたちは、隣国の核攻撃に対して、対応できるのか。核戦力は持っていないが、核戦力をもつアメリカ軍に守られている。その中で、本当の非核三原則を唱えられるのかということである。6カ国協議の参加国でないのは核保有せず、外交･自衛の観点から、アメリカの一州に過ぎないからであろうか。

わたしは、この問題定義に尤もだなと思う。

しかしながら、わたしは日本は絶対に核を持ってはいけないと信じる。
それは、世界唯一の被爆国であるからだ。わたしたちの祖先は、核実験などで死んだのではなく、戦争のために作られた核爆弾によって死んだのである。その歴史を忘れてはいけないと思う。ここで注意してもらいたいのは、わたしは、日本に原爆を落とした、アメリカ軍への恨みを忘れてはならないということではなく、核爆弾がどれだけの犠牲を出すかを忘れてはならないということがいいたいのである。

世界の全ての国が自衛という理由から軍隊をもつ。日本もそうである。しかしながら、わたしたちは戦後60年近く、自国の軍隊を軍隊と呼ぶことも禁じ、核を持つことも禁じた。それだけ、第二次世界大戦の敗戦により、反戦の意思が強まり、現在にもそれを願っているのである。

日本が軍を持たないことについては、ＧＨＱが日本が軍を持たないように作った憲法を未だに守っているという議論があるが、ＧＨＱがいかにして日本国に憲法を作らせたかには不満が多くあるが、その内容については、多くの日本人が賛同したそうだ。わたしもそうである。

日本には今長年守ってきた規律を考え直す時来ている。女性天皇即位、自衛隊についてである。それに伴い、天皇のあり方、アジア･アメリカ外交を考え直すときが来ている。
日本は世界にない新しいアイディアで自分の国のアイデンディティ、自衛について定義をしなおさなくてはならないと思う。内容については、北朝鮮やアメリカなど、他国に合わせる必要はない。ただ、国際的に理解される説明義務があるだけである。

サンフランシスコ平和条約を調印するとき、吉田茂が彼に英文の校正を頼んだところ、「日本国がやっと占領という屈辱的な歴史から開放され、独立を宣言するときに、開催国に言語をあわせるとは何事か」と、一喝した。その後急遽原稿は書き直され、つなぎ合わされた。このおかげで、日本は第二次世界大戦後の自国の独立宣言を、自国の言語で行なったのである。

理想の人

結婚なんて、ずぅーっと先の話に思えるけど、最近「陽ちゃんの理想の人ってどんな人」という質問があったので考えてみた。
(お姉ちゃんが24歳で結婚したなんて！やっぱすげー姉ちゃん！)

私を好いてくれているという条件のもと。。。あと、男であること(お姉ちゃんあたしレズじゃないから)

1）年上
　私の好きはイコール尊敬してるということ。私は気難しい話も楽しく出来る人が魅力的に感じられるし尊敬できる。年下を尊敬するようになったら、自分がおしまいという気持ちがあるので、年上の中でも、尊敬できる人が理想的だ。

2）理屈やでかつ感情がある人
　理屈的に考えてばっかりだと、感情を忘れがちだが、それをしていない人。たとえば、難しい話も出来るけど、映画で泣いたり、人や動物の不幸を痛むことができるひと。

3）許容力がある人
　自分の考えにはきちんと理屈があるが、他人と意見が異なったとき、相手の意見の違いを受け入れられる人。ここで感情的になる人は、私は尊敬できない。わたしは討論が好きで、自分と意見の異なる人と多く会いたいが、その人たちにいちいち感情を害されては困る。私の父が意見が異なる人を嫌う傾向があるため、この心配がぬぐえない。

４）お姉ちゃんみたいに細かい人
　わたしが細かくない為、またこれから細かくしようとしても、片付けられる人になろうとしても限界があると甘えたくなったため、相手に求めることにした。てへ♪

5）老後のプランが合う人
　あたしヨーロッパに行って絵とか描きたいから(独断と希望)。外国に行く事に抵抗ある人とかありえない。

んー、これぐらいかな。どぉせこれにぴったり合う人には出会えないだろうけど、傾向として、こんな感じの人が私がだんなさんにしたい人。その人が私を好いてくれればの話だけど。

最近、自分の反省するところが多々見えてきた。

１）私はまず、部屋が汚い。
彼氏、友達に聞くと、「部屋が汚いと気になってしかたがない。」　はっきりいって、そんな気持ち、ぜんぜんわからない。別に汚くても気にならない。さすがに髪の毛がたまっていたり、ゴキちゃんが発生すると片付けるが。

２）私には責任能力が乏しい。
私は自分のことを考えるのは、かなり得意だと思う。自分の将来、今現在したいこと。でも周りの人のことを考えたり、そのために自分の嫌いなことをする事がない。彼氏にずばり言われたのが、「お前は自分の好きなことは一生懸命するが、自分の嫌いなことはとことん適当だ」。ご名答。。。

３）持続力がない。
たとえば、ＴＯＥＦＬの勉強やこのブログもそうだが、大体3ヶ月しか持たない。研究室も行くときは行くが行かなくなると、とことん行かなくなってしまう。

ぱっと思いついた3点をあげた。
結論を言うとわたしはこれから自分にあう職種が心配になってきたのである。
わたしは実験者タイプであろうか、接客タイプであろうか。
なにか自分をうごかすプレッシャーが自分以外のどこかにもあると、楽だと思ってしまう。

付け加えて、私が反省していることは、いままで、自分が何か特別な人間であるように思っていたことだ。よく周りをみると、一生懸命勉強している人、実験している人がいる。
わたしはある一点が悪いと、すべて悪いと人をみなしてしまう、昔の癖が抜けていないようだ。
とてもこどもっぽいと感じた。

２３歳で気づくのも遅いと思うが、この機会に感謝したい。
この反省が3ヶ月にならないように、恥ずかしながらブログにのせた。

23歳の誕生日を2月に迎える私に２つのニュースが飛び込んできた。
それは同級生が死んだということだ。

一人は同級生ということでしか面識のない女性で、もう一人は明るくて時々話もする友達だった。
しかもとても衝撃だったことにこのことが1週間も間を空けないでおきたことだ。

自殺か病気だったのか？
とても白状だが、原因が知らされないだけに、死因はなんだったんだろうと思う。
それにまして、もし自殺だとしたら、どんな思いを持って死んでいったんだろうと思う。
ほんとに死んでしまうとすべては闇の中に消えて、なんにも残らないのだなと実感した。

若くして死ぬということは、遺族以外の人にとってはこういうことなんだなと思った。
悲しいけれど、時間は着実に過ぎていく。
丁度私たちの年代はこれから国家試験、就職、留学、結婚といった未来が感じられる年代だ。
そのときに、死んでしまう同年代の人を思うと、親もその本人も無念でならない。

棺に入った同級生の死体はどれも死のにおいに包まれていた。信じられなかった。
本当に普通に5年間同じ学校に通っていたのに。この前言葉を交わしたばかりだったのに。

人はほんとにいつ死ぬかわからない。だから、それと同じくらい生まれてきた理由もわからない。
だけど、私はこの二人の同級生の死で、生きることにある種の責任を思った。

子供の異変

今日テレビで「今子供があぶない」といった内容の番組をやっていた。

そういえば日本では学校内でしかも同級生同士が殺傷しあうなど、私が小学生のころには想像もできなかったような事件がおきている。残虐な殺人の低年齢化である。またその原因として、親という役割を果たせなくなっただらしない大人たちや、同様に無責任な教師たちがあげられていた。

石原都知事は知り合いの外国人ジャーナリストが渋谷でたむろしている青少年を取材して、髪や身なり(ファッション)はきちんと手入れされているのに、地べたに直接座るなどというマナーの低いことをすることにないし、世界でもっとも豊かで惨めな子供たちと題して記事を書いたそうだ。また、ニートという問題も日本では起こってきており、それも生活を援助してくれる親があり、ある程度の生活はできるが、自立ができないという、豊かな日本独特の欠点が指摘されていた。
そのテレビの中で言われていたのだが、殺人を起こした少年少女がよく言うことは、「殺した人が生き返ったら、謝りたい」だそうだ。これはゲームという非現実と現実の区別がまったくできていない証拠であり、やはり現代に象徴されるゲームが子供に与える影響の深さを物語っていると思う。人間がやってしまうことにリセットボタンはないのだ。

この番組は芸能人や現役の学校の先生、子供のかけこみ寺として働きかける住職、生活指導を行う先生、少年指導を行う団体の人たちなどが参加しており、実際に行っている活動に基づいた意見を交換していた。それぞれが強い信念を持っているがために衝突もしていた。もちろんこれといったすべてを一括するような答えを出すことを目的としたものではなく、日本全国にひとつでも有効なアイディアを提議することができればよいと司会者は言っていた。

幼児の異変に関する記事では、幼児が手のない自画像を書いたり、水玉模様の川を描いたり、白い画用紙にから揚げ一個の絵を描いたりするという事から、表現という点で今の子供たちに過去と比べて成長不良が見られている。また別の問題としてとても大人びた会話をすることができる子供もいるということである。このような幼児の能力の二極化は、集団で遊ぶことが減り、家で個人が努力により教育を受ける機会が増えたことが要因となっている。幼児教育の発展から、今では英語教育から右脳開発教育までさまざまなことを子供に与えることもできる。私はこれらのことは悪くはないと思うが、やはり、幼少期にお稽古事をした子供と真っ黒になるまで遊んだ子供では、大きくなってからの伸びが違うという。

親が子供をどう育てたいかは、その親の個人的な経験に基づいていると思う。

私は、自分がそう育てられたように、性格的に欠点はあっても、精神的弱者にはならないように、自分の子供を育てたいと思った。

With the help of rapid transportation, now we can see a lot of different kinds of restaurants such as Italian, Chinese, India and so on. Now, we can appreciate almost all food around the world by just going out for our neighborhood. I support it if there is a new restaurant going to be built in my neighborhood because there are some advantages that we can get. I am going to metion about the reasons below.

One of the advantages is that building a new restaurant give work place to some people. If they want to open a new restaurant, they have to get enough workers to run the restaurant. And those workers are often picked up from the people who live in the area. So that will be a good chace for those people to earn a money by working in a new restaurant.

Another advantage is that building a new restaurant can provide us a new place to hang out. Building a new restaurant will be big news to us because we like something new and make us want to go there right after its opening. We can talk about our school lives and personal lives whilst we enjoying a new styled restaurant in our neighborhood.

The other advantage is that building a new restaurant gives us a new taste that we never tasted before. Since the progress of food transportation, we can get a food alomost all around the world. And also there are a lot people comming into our country, there are alot of people who can cook traditional foods of their own countries. These facts make it possible for those foreigner to open a new restaurant serves their traditional food, and make it possible for us too, to enjoy foods from other countrie just going to a near restaurant.

I support it if there is a new restaurant going to be built in my neighborhood because there are some advantages that we can get like I mentioned above.

We alway try to adjust ourselves to a new environment when we move to a new place. We are total stranger at the first time. It is not too much to say that our neighbors are the key people who make our new lives full of fun or not. So, good quality as neighbors is friendly, less noisy and have the ability to make safe environment to other people.

One of good quality ot be good neighbors is being friendly. If you move to a new place, even that is a dwelling while you attend to school, you will expose yourself to a brand new world from what you have been accustom to living. It easy to imaging that having friendly neighbors such as someone who like to invite you to a potluck party or go to church with them will make your life easy especially in that occasion.

Other good quality to be good neighbors is being less noisy. In Japan, there was a case of murder that happend because noisy dweller annoyed the woman who lived next door to him and killed him because she couldn't stand for the obstruction. So, to make a good environment around your community, it is important to make a less noise not to disturb other people.

Other good quality to be good neighbors is having an average knowlege about common sence. We don't want neighbors who believe in a cult, regular drug users. If you have those kinds of neighbors, it is not good environ ment to kids and might influence also to you in a bad way.

All in all, being friendly, less noisy and having the ability to make safe environment to other people are the qualities of a good neighbor for me.

I read the article on The Japan Times Weekly Feb 4, 2006 that introduced us the book titled ROGUE STATE, written by William Blum, which got a bona fide book blurb from Osama bin Laden.

He is a writer who is accostomed to laboring in relative left-wing and not well known in the U.S. His foreign-policy critique is that U.S. interventions abroad create enemies. How he mentions about it on his book is "If I were the president, I could stop terrorist attacks against the United States in a few days. Permanently. I would first apologize - very publicly and very sincerely- to all the widows and orphans the impoverished and the totured, and all the many millions of other victims of American imperialism."

He made clear that he deplores the attacks of Sep. 11, 2001. But he said that they were an understandable retaliation against U.S. foreign policy. "The thesis in my books and my writing is that anti-U.S. terrorism arises from the behavior of U.S. foreign policy. It is what the U.S. government does, which angers people all over the world." He also said, "I am totally against what they did. But we cannot view that as totally the acts of a bunch of madmen. If we do....we will continue making the same mistakes, and the war on terror will be as doomed to fail as the war on drugs." When it is pinted out that terrorists target innocent civilians, which is not U.S. policy, he replies that U.S. tactics in Iraq have led to the deaths of thousands of civilians. "We bomb homes and these people have families, and Washington refuses to apologize for these civilian deaths. The absence of concern makes their actions almost equal to a deliverate targeting of civilians."

It was a bit of surprise for me to know that there is an American who thinks like that. Because I found a similar story on the internet that a Japanese student went to U.S. university and found out that Americans tended not to know the fact that they have been hated by people all around the world when the student discussed about Kosovo dispute with American students.

The same thing has been happening to Japan.

We have kept having a strong hostility towards us from South Korea and China. We have never admitted enough for them about our historical facts that we treat both country's civilians horribly during our invasions and wars. I was not even taught what we had done in wars that we involved, we was taught only about our win and lose. The both countries argue with this Japanese educational falt. It's like we did not apologize - very publicly and very sincerely- to all the widows and orphans the impoverished and the totured, and all the many millions of other victims of Japanese imperialism.

I think we have angered the both countries by showing the absence of concern for the historical facts. I also think that Japan still now are not willing to apologize - very publicly and very sincerely- because apologizing what we did for them is a polite way to say Japan's losing forced by not economicaly equal countries.

I found an interesting post on Japundit!
Apparently, in Kansai area in Japan, there is a costome that people poke a cooked sardine's head throught a branch of holly and put them by their doors so that they can protect themselves from evil sprits on the day of Setsubun(the day before the starting of spring) . Really weird!! But most surprisingly, there is specific meaning for that(this is so Japanese :)). The leaf of holly is for poking evil sprits'(Onis') eyes when they try to come into one's house, and the smoke and the smell made by the act of cooking sardine is also for driving them away from one's house.

I am definitely sure that this is the only costome you can see in Kansai area, becase I am from Kyusyu, the most western area of Japan, but I've never heard or saw this kind of thing in there. We only did Mamemaki. Now, it sounds a little boring only having a Mamemaki costom!!

Not all classes are attendance required in university. Some people say their attendance should be controlled by university, some people say that is up to their wishes. I agreet to the idea that "university students should be required to attend clsses" and I am going to mention why I think that way.

Students sometimes don't take the classes that are important to their future because they do not always know what are the good classes for them. So it is good to make the all subjects that are good for them required even though that would be hardwork for them for the first time.

If the classes are required, students can be trained to study equally and can have the same avarage of inteligence. Most of the universities leave it upto students' ambitions how much they study, and that is one of the reasons that we see a lot of dishonest students today. Universities have to take a responsibility as educational institutes, so they should have more attending required classes for students.

When the classes are fiiled with students, it also encourages teachers to teach. Teachers feel more realistic responsibilities to teaching, and they might start to reconsider the way they teach and change it in a better way for students.

Since having attendance required classes is good not only to students but also teachers, I agree to the idea that "university students should be required to attend clsses."

Now we see a lot of restaurant in our neighborhoods. However, when we eat in a restaurant, we are not sure about what is in the food that we are eating, the food is expensive, and they are not variety enough for balanced nutrients. These are why I prefer to eat at home.

One of the problems of eating at restaurants is that we can not know for sure what is in the meals served in a restaurant. For example, in Japan, there was a big news that told us that there was a Japanese traditional eel restaurant that served eels covered with its secret sause which accidentally filled with cockroachs for a long time.

One of the other problems is that the more you eat at restaurant, the more it costs. When you go to a restaurant, you pay not only for food but also for personal costs and costs for maintenance of the restaurant. Those are why eating outside of your house tends to be expensive.

One of the other problems is that we can not get various enough foods form eating out. When you go to "Denny's" all you can eat are baked meats, hamberger and few fish meals. On the other hand, when you eat in your home, you can eat various baked, boiled steamed chicken, beef, pork and fish and also vesitables, fruits.

There are some dangerous problems by eating outside of your house like I metioned above so I prefer to eat at home.

People visit museums when they travel to new places because it is easy way to understand the places. You can understand how people think about the nature around the places, what the tendencies of art in the places and the historys of the places.

By visiting the museum in a new place that you visit, you can see how the place think and treat the nature around the place. For example, I visited Monterey Bay Aqarium when I travel to California, and I could see here and there in the aqarium that it wants to lead us to protect the marine environment, and the style was really different from that of Japanese aqariums which just show rare marine animals. I got this idea especially when I see the display that showed me how it is easy for turtles to mistake jellyfishs for plastic bags.

By visiting the museum in a new place that you visit, you can see what the art are like in the place. For example, one of my friends went to MOMA(Museum of Modern Art) in San Fransisco when she visited California. And she was surprised from the gorgeous and showy pop colored American modern arts because she was only familiar with Japanese arts which are mostly expressed in a calm decent way. By seeing those American arts, she understood why the Japanese people tend to think that U.S.A is more energetic place that Japan.

For example, a lot of foreighners visit Museum of Atom Bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki when they visit Japan. People tend not to know about the importance of playing sports because of the way how their university deal with it. University participants think only studying is important to their students. However, in my opinion, playing sports is also an important thing for students because it is a simple way to give students healty, stress-free lives and to teach about teamwork. So, I agree the statement that say "universities should give the same amount of money to their students' sports activities as they give to their university libraries."

If a university spend the same amount of money to its students' sports activities, that will make its students think the importance of maintaining their healths. In this modern century, adults have less time to spend their time playing sports because their busy working. And that is one of the reasons that we see a lot of mental diseases of heart attacks than we used to. So if they taugh that it is important to exersize even your are busy studing, they would know subconsciously about the importance of it and keep that even they start working.

If a university deal students' sports activities with the same respect as they do libraries, the students don't feel guilty about playing sports for refreshing their stress of studying. Since most of the university professors prefer serious students, playing sports is considered as something students should not do while they are university students. And that misunderstanding tend to narrow down students' ways of releasing their stress from busy university lives. It is easy for people to say that the successed people are lucky. However, if they really know how much efforts that they devote to their jobs, they can not say that they are just lucky. So I agree to the statement above and only the hard works that they have done lead them to catch the chances to make them success. Here is why.

Professor Kadoi is the only person who is considered as a real resarcher in my university because he makes cell lines that will be usefull in cytology and immunology area, and write achademic papers every year. I hear that every other professor are saying that he is a lucky guy who can do whatever he wants to, but we are busy with other small jobs so we can not do the research that we want to. But they don't know the fact that he comes to school 8 30 in the mornig and leave to home 8 P.M. and do his research and also the small jobs as a professor all day long. If they do the same amount of work as he does, I am pretty sure that they can contribute the same success that are similar to his works.

In Japan, there are women who called "Millionase", those who earn over a million every year. In the TV show that interviewed to those successed career women, evry women said that what had made them success was hard works. One of the Millionese said that she only could sleep 3 hours because she had a lot work to do in a day. She also said that because she was busy all the time and always thought about her job, it was easy for her to catch the chances to make her seccess in the future.

A lot of people dream to live in a big city. The benefits that you can get from living in a big city are high income, high quality of education and convenience. In that matter, although I am from a small town, I prefer to live in a big city.

If you live in a big city, you can get high income in a big city. In my hometown, Yatsushiro, a typical rural town in Japan, normal an hourly wage is from 580 to 600 yen. On the other hand, in Tokyo, a well known big city in Japan, normal an hourly wage is from 900 to 1200 yen. Since there is a lot of customers in a big city, we are guaranteed to get a high income.

Other benefit that you can get from living in a big city, we can get high quality of education. In a big city, there are a lot of children that those of in a small town, so there are more serious competition among them. An environment that filled with competition is good for children in consideration of seeking more advanced lives. The more high education that you get, the more rich lives you get, so there are a lot of cram schools in big city and that enable the children who live in a big city to get a high quality of education.

Living in a big city is more convenient that living in a rural town. . In my hometown, Yatsushiro, a typical rural town in Japan, there are train transportations every 35 minutes and normally have one or two carriages. On the other hand, in Tokyo, a well known big city in Japan, there are train transportations in every 2 or 3 minutes and normally have 6 or 15 carriages.

knowledge gained from experience and knowledge gained from books both have pro and con. An experience are so practical but can not be shared with other people. Knowledge are easy to get various information in a short time. In consider of merits for our future, I say knowledge gained from experience is more important.

Knowledge gained from experience are so practical that you can appliy the experience to other thing. For example, you have experience staying in France, you can use that experience to be a French language teacher, or an adviser for people who wants to go to France. However its demerits are time consuming and not able to share it with other people because experience is someting that only the person who acutually experiencing it can appriciate.

Knowledge gained from books are easy to get. You can get verious information for brief time by reading books and you can share the information that you got from books with many other people. However its demerit is it is not practical.

The really important thing to chage the world better, we need not just criticizing the situation by a lot of information that you get from books or paperspractical and realistic technique to make good revolution happen. All in all, I would say knowledge gained from experience is more important because it is practical.

これまたWill君の影響で自衛隊について本を読み始めた。

まだ本を読み始めたばかりで、私自身の意見は固まってはいないが、自衛隊について少しだけ解ったのでここに書いてみる。

そもそも軍隊とは自衛(自国を守る)と言う目的で作られている為、アメリカが持つ軍隊も、北朝鮮が持つ軍隊も、自国の防衛を目的とした自衛隊と言える。すなわちその逆もしかりで、日本の自衛隊も結局は軍隊と言えるはずである。
また、大日本帝国時代の軍隊を基盤として作られた自衛隊であるため、その構造は軍隊のそれと非常に良く似ている。

それなのになぜ日本では自衛隊を軍隊と呼ばないのか？

1つの説として、自衛隊が出来たときの時代背景にあった。自衛隊の設立ははそもそもアメリカが日本に要求したものだった。北朝鮮が韓国を攻め、韓国への軍隊支援のために日本にいた多くのアメリカ軍が韓国へ動員された。そのため、日本を守るアメリカ軍人の不足を補う為、アメリカはその対策を日本の新規軍事設立に求めた。これはポツダム宣言かポーツマツ条約(本が今手元にないため、あいまい)に記載があったため、日本は逆らえなかったと言う。
そしてその名前を付ける際、敗戦後にのこる軍隊への国民の感情を考慮し、軍隊と言う表現を極力避け、平和(日本は戦争を起こさない)を大々的にアピールしたかったのだそうだ。

しかしながら、自衛隊設立当初から、日本政府は「日本には陸海空自衛隊というものがあり、自国を守る為には戦闘機はあるが、それは軍隊ではない」と言うような苦しい説明に悩まされていた。

そして今、テロリズムが現実問題となった今、ずぅっとタブー視されていた「自衛隊を軍隊と呼ぶのか？日本は軍隊を持つ国になるのか？」という問題が解決されるべき問題として上がってきたのである。

私は昔からなんでお父さんって歴史に興味があるのかと不思議でならなかったが、今はその気持ちがなんとなく解った気がした。

全ての国がそうだと思うが、歴史から学ぶ事は多い。
特に日本は昔の国外に対して閉鎖的な歴史から、戦争というものを足がかりとして、国外に対して開放的に変化していった。その中で、歴史ある国が180度ガラっと変わったとは考えにくく、そのなかで、他国では考えられないような矛盾や対立があったはずである。

私は「ユダヤ人と日本人」という本にあるように、水と安全はタダという考えが頭の中に少なからずある、現代の日本人の典型的な一人だと思う。わたしは神経質なまでに軍隊という考えを消そうとして来た、日本政府のやり方にうまく答えていたのかもしれない。
それでも私は武力を使った戦争は絶対に反対なので、日本が参加した戦争、そのときの日本のやり方などを良く知り、日本がこれからどの様にして軍事(自衛隊)をとらえていくのか、アメリカが起こしている戦争にかかわっていくのかを予測して、心の準備をしておきたいと思う。

日本はとかく「何とかなるよぉ」という動きが国自体(国民？)にあると思う。靖国問題、ひいては隣国(韓国･中国)との関係、今回の自衛隊の問題(憲法第9条)においても、今までずっと問題になりつつも解決されてきた事が無かった。私は政治家になるつもりは毛頭ないが、だからといってこれらの問題について知らなくて良いなんてことはなくて、私個人として、国外の人に質問されたとき答えられる日本人でありたいと思った。

Television has been widely shared information sourse and entertaining provider. It can give us common topics to talk about with other people, hints to understand what people think, and good issues for family communicaiton. So I disagree to the statement that say television has destroyed communication amoung friends and family.

Watching soup opera give you a common subject to talk about with your friends. School children can share the idea about having a boyfriend or girlfrien, or putting a make up the way people do in the soap opera that they are talking about. You can feel more conected with your friends by talking the same subject.

Watching TV program with children make their parents know how their children think about what is going on in their lives and their future. Parents can see how their children grew up by watching them give a sympathy or angry to a criminal in news and see what they like by watching them how to react to some sports program or TV commercial.

Watching TV program give a parent a good issue to talk with their children. Nowadays, there are a lot of parents work in double harness, so a lot of them don't have much time to talk with their children and even have time to talk with them, they can not come up with good issue because they are not used to talking with them. But TV program like news and entertaining program are generation-wide, so by just watching it, parents can get a good issue to talk with their children.

Because watching TV has a lot of merits for our lives like I mentioned above , I disagree to the statement that say television has destroy friends and family communication.

People like to see movies and watch TV. It's entertaining and educational. Movie or television can change people's behavior. For example, they have the effects on the trend, make people think what is right or wrong and make people not to worry about facing the difficulties in their lives.

It's commonly seen that the clothes which actress or actors are wearing in soap opera tend to become the mode of that time. People want to buy what celebrities are wearing, in that matter, television can change what people want to buy by using celebrities for a advertisement. It is a vary famous story that there were a big wave of people's desire to buy what Sara Jesica Parker was wearing, as Carrie in "Sex and the City".

Movie or television make people think about its main issue by giving people a lot of information about it. After the opening of "Fahrenheit 9 11", people, especially American, began to think about the justice of the country's choice of sending its millitary to Iraq. And the wave droped the president's approval rating.

Movie or television can encourage people not to afraid to face a problem in their lives or what is important in their lives. A hero movie like "Lord of the Ring", even it's a fantasy movie, you see how the main character face and handle the difficulties in his life. And by seeing that, you get the ideas like never giving up or importance of friendships.

If you could change one important thing about your hometown, what would you change? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.

I'm from Yatsushiro, a small town in Kumamoto prefecture in Japan. Scince my hometown is far from the big city, it is suffer from dicreasing population and not juzzed up city. I can see serious damage from them in main shopping arcade. So if I could change one important thing about my hometown, I would change the declined shopping arcade now called shutter street.

When the main shopping arcade prosper, there would be many local people in the arcade and the city can get the local consumer back to its main street. Children like the place that is full of people, so when the arcade is prosper, the city can get yonger age consumer, and that will lead to give children and mostly eldery shop owner good chances to chat.

Shopping arcade is more convinient to eldery people consider its structure like not having escalator or stair that is usually dangerous for them. Scince the stores in shopping arcade are not big and not having a lot of children chacing each other around, so it is more safe to eldery people to shop in the store.

People feel more connected with the city whey they shop in shopping arcade that is related to the city than they do in a big department store chain. When you shop in the arcade, you can buy the product only purchasable in the city, so you will feel more related to the city by spending money to something from your hometown.

These are the reasons why I would change the declined shopping arcade for my hometown.

A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory near your community. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence on your community. Do you support or oppose the factory? Explain your position.

My hometown is Yatsushiro, a small agricultural city which is famous for its Tatami(Japanese traditional mat) products. Since the city is remote from big city, my hometown has to face problems such as dicreased population, and shopping arcade that have many closed shops, etc. Making a large factory in a discreaced populated town is considered as one of solutions solve the problem of the small town. In consideration of my hometown, I support making a factory. Although there are demerits from making it but we have to take the risks to make our community prosper.

Advantages that we can get from building a large factory close to our community are a large population, economy growth and the future simble of the community. A large factory needs many poeple to work there, so making a large factory will bring big population to the area it's going to build in. And when there are many people to consume, the economy in the community will grow. And also, the community can use the factory as a simble of it to advertise to other community.

Disadvantages that we can get from building a large factory close to our community are dicreesing workers at small factories those were already there for a long time, pollution in the community and destroying the site that fits to our community. Like I mentioned above, A large factory needs many poeple to work there, so making a large factory will not only bring big population to the area but also take workers from small factories that were already there and make the factories smaller and more weak. It is easy to imagine that a large factory might cause air or water polution in the community and distroy the view of the community because of the large buildings.

When I think about my hometown, making a factory is more effective way to prosper the community. After all, the benefit from making a factory outweigh the dangers such as popution of the air, because we also have modern technology to solve the problem.

I start to read The Japan Times Online!! (I subscribe to The Japan Time Weekly)
It helps me to chatch up with world occasions, brush up my reading skill and know how to explain Japan in English.

I decide to do this because these 3 things are important to my TOEFL writing. But more than this, I think I should make myself involve in a grown up state. I should know more about Japan and what are happening in the world.

先生は、新たに樹立できそうである自分の単球株化細胞の写真をモノクロで撮影しようとしていた。
先生はその株化細胞の樹立を確信するまで、それらの細胞のフラスコでの像を何度も見ていたが、それを写真に撮るというのは初めてだった。写真という証拠を残すという点で、国際雑誌に投稿する事を念頭に置いている先生には、とても意味深い事のようで、とても集中していらっしゃるのがとても伝わってきた。

写真のフィルム現像というのは、暗箱の中で、現像ウィールにフィルムを巻いて、それを現像タンクに入れ、上から現像液を流し込み転倒攪拌をする。暗箱の中で見えないので、フィルムをウィールに巻く作業は失敗する事も多い。フィルムがくっついてしまい、現像液がうまく浸透せず、そのまま定着してしまうので写真にならないのだ。写真に関してはアマチュアである科学者が一番心配するのはこの点である。

先生も同様にこの事を心配していた。私も今まで何度か先生が一部のフィルムで失敗しているのを見た事があった。

研究室の電気を消して、10枚ほど撮影した後、先生は流れるようにフィルム現像の工程に入った。そこには何の迷いもないように私には見えた。現像液で反応させ、続いて定着液で反応させた後、初めて肉眼でフィルムを見る事ができるようになった。先生はいつものように、洗剤水へフィルムを入れると時に、フィルムがくっつくという失敗がないか確認した。その時、

「神様、どうか写って。。。」

三歩ほど離れていたところにたってみていた私が聞き取れるか、取れないほどの声で先生がつぶやいていた。門井先生は67歳で、生粋の日本男児で、頑固者で、エゴイストで、軽はずみに神頼みなどするような人では決して無い。
だからその時は私は、この科学者が、その細胞にこれだけの思い入れをしているということに、ものすごく感動した。その細胞は先生自身の知識欲を満たすものかもしれないし、先生の未来の科学に伝えたものなのかもしれないし、またその両方かも知れないし、もっと門井先生なりの多くの意味があるかもしれない。ただ、その姿は何も語らなくても、多くの事を私に考えさせた。留学に対する私の姿勢、将来に関する私の姿勢についてだった。私の姿勢すべては先生に比べるとあまりにもお粗末で、子供じみ過ぎだと思った。

私は自分が67歳になったとき、門井先生のように人に影響を与える人になっているだろうか？
今は自分より優れている点を持っている人を上に眺めて、追っかけるということばかりしているから、一生なにかを追っかける人生になるのだろうか？
小泉首相が内閣メルマガで言っているように、オリンピック選手は、恵まれた才能に加え、人並み以上の努力をしている。
「少年老いやすく、学成りがたし」
私も自分は自分のしたい事の中で、どの才能に恵まれているのか、何に向いているのか見極め、それを仕事にしたいなと思った。

Your government has annouced that it wishes to build a military base near your community. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence on your community. Do you support or oppose the military base?

Recently, we had some large scale of terrorisms in the U.S.A. and England. Having a military base in or close to your community might not be impossible thing to happen. But havin it in one's community has merits and demerits. If my governmetn annouced that it wants to built a base near my community, I will support the base.

Having the acutual military that is willing to save not only your community but also your country near my community makes you feel more safe because of its realty, and scince a lot of people are going to move into your community, its economy will grow. You will be able to see what solder are doing in thier base, so you can understand more about military.

On the other hand, if your community are going to have a military base, it could be noisy because of its training by guns and planes, could be severly dangerous when plane crushs happen over your community and could take a lot of land and make the place that people live smaller.

We need more safety scince we recently had some large scale of terrorisms and it is easy to imagine that some of them are going to happen soon. There is a choice to make artificial land for military but it is bad for our environment at the same time. These are why I support to have a military in our community.

I did write this in 30 mins but i know that this contains a lot of gramatical, spelling mistakes... and is not flowing.
I really don't know how to write this comparision essay. The comparision ssays must have introduction, body that includes comparision part, and my idea about that. Do I have to put why I agree/disagree to the statement and write also the conclusion? Or I don't need to write the conclusion.... :(

エントロピーの法則

今日、スーパー銭湯に行った。
あたしは隅っこが好きだから、隅っこで髪の毛を洗っていた。
そうすると、次に入ってきた人があたしと反対側の隅っこに座って髪の毛を洗い始めた。

エントロピーだなぁ。。。

大学2年生のころ生物の授業でエントロピーという面白い科学の法則を学んだ。
エントロピーとは、自然界のものは高エネルギーから低エネルギーの方向へ向かうという法則である。
たとえば、お湯はほうっておくと水になる。逆に熱というエネルギーを加えない限り、水はお湯にならない。高いところにあるものは低いところに向かおうとする。逆に低いところにあるものは、高いところに持っていくなど、位置エネルギーを与えないと高いところに存在しない。

これは人間の行動にも応用できる。

向かい合わせの長いすの電車に座るとき、空いているならばだいたい人は端っこに座る。
そして次に入ってきた人はある程度先に座っていた人より離れて座る。
しかし、時々は次に入ってきた人が先に座っていた人の隣に座るときがある。
それは知り合いという特別な関係があるときである。

部屋というものは散らかっていくものである。
しかし、片付けるときれいなままである。

すなわち、知り合いという関係、片付けるという、何らかの力、エネルギーを与えなければ、電車の座席は無秩序だし、部屋のなかも無秩序となる。

人間の行動・部屋の散らかりようは、水と一緒なのか！

でもいったいなぜ自然界のものは低エネルギーの方へ行きたがるのか？
その生物の先生曰く、「科学者は理由はわからないものに対して法則とい名前をつけます」といっていた。
理由はわかんないけど、法則性(再現性)があるから法則にしよう！
この限界のある人間が、がんばって自然界を理解しようとした試みを私はかわいいと思った。

将来自分の子供が、部屋がちらかるのはエントロピーだから自然のことなんだ！とかいいて威張ってしまったらどうしようと、どうでもいい心配をしてしまった。

It has been said, "Not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and cantrast knowledge gained from exparience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?

What we learn from our experience are practical things.
we can apply what we learn from our exparience to new things. One of my friends got a waitress job for the first time in her life. She didn't know not only what to do but what the costmers wanted; good services, impression. As she kept doing that job, she began to know what kind of words she had to use to make costmers feel good about the restaurant, and at what situation she should smile to them to give them a good impression. After she gets the whole waitress experience, her character changed in a good way. Now she knows how to make her friends feel good, and she can think about what her friends might want, just like in a way to think about the restaurant's custmers.

we can get more successed cases when we use the knowledge from our experience than when we use the knowledge from books that we have read. A sister of one of my friends is a doctor. When she tries to get a blood sample from one of her patients, the only thing that she thinks about is to get a blood. She palpates the blood vessel and stick a needle in the angle that she thinks it's going to hit the vessel. And most in this kind of cases, she can get blood samples. In the textbook that she used when she was in medical school, it is said that when one tries to get a blood sample, one has to insert the needle in 45 degrees and then pull the inner cylinge tp obtain the blood. But what she says is, nobody has the same shape of blood vessel, depth of
